CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (July 2, 2010)—The 4th of July weekend entertainment started early at Hawkeye Downs Speedway on Friday night with six entertaining features, Lil’Racer Car Club BoxCar Races, and post-race entertainment with Greenbrier in the Tavern on the Mall. All of the normal racing divisions were competing for Papa Johns Cup/I-Wireless Championship Series points except the Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen, which had the night off. Nathan Ballard kept his Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock streak alive winning his fifth straight feature. He has now won six of seven features in 2010. Dave McCalla took the lead from Jim Hanson on lap two as a six-car logjam formed behind him. McCalla continued to lead until lap nine when Gary Pfantz squeezed into the point and he held the top spot until Nathan Ballard took command on the white flag lap and held on for the win. Pfantz, McCalla, Matt Petrzelka, and Kandi Floyd all finished in the top five. There was a little post-race drama in the tech barn as the engine of Nathan Ballard was claimed. Ballard agreed to sell and the win stands pending final inspection of the engine.

David Ballstaedt almost picked up second-straight Barron Motor Supply IMCA Stock Car feature win Friday night but Cory Houdek would have no part of that, collecting his first win of the season. The race saw three different leaders in the first seven laps before caution slowed the action on lap eight. Ballstaedt led off the restart with Houdek close behind and the pair ran virtually side-by-side for the final laps.
It was a near photo finish for the win with Houdek crossing the timing loop just .002 seconds ahead of Ballstaedt as the duo took the checkered flag. Current point leader Bob Ahrensdsen kept his strong season going finishing third while Jim Hanson and Greg Hentrich rounded out the top five.

Tim Dains recorded his second win of the season in Coca-Cola IMCA SportMods and looks to be the current hot driver in the division, winning two of the last three races. Dains led all fifteen laps of the feature which he started outside of row one. Point leader Aric Becker finished second while Scott Kositzky finished third. Blake Carson retired from the race with mechanical issues and finished fourth.

If Brad Burhite hadn’t been suffering some mysterious apparent electrical or fuel problem in his #44 Sunline Hornet he may have easily won Friday nights’ 20-lap feature. He roared into the lead early after escaping from a field that charged into the first two turns four-wide and left the pack well behind before losing power with six laps gone. Brad Chandler found himself in the lead at the halfway mark and despite some strong pressure from Chuck Hanson held on for his second win of the season and his first since opening night.
Hanson held on to second while last weeks’ winner Dallas Chandler finished third. Zach Burhite finished fourth and Jim Hanson was fifth.
The Sunline hornets also ran a six-car, six-lap “Promoters Choice Trophy Dash” which featured some of the cars that thus far this season haven’t finished at the front of the standings.

Gase, Plummer, Jennings, Kyle Hinrichs, and Griffin McGrath were in the top five at the halfway point.
