ANDERSON, BOHNSACK, HOUDEK TOP WILD NIGHT AT HAWKEYE DOWNS
SPORTMODS AND SPORTSMEN FEATURES SCRUBBED DUE TO RAIN
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (July 30, 2010) — There was either a full moon hiding under
the misty skies or the one-week layoff from last weeks’ rainout had some
sort of effect but racing was “interesting” to say the least at Hawkeye
Downs Speedway on Friday night. The mist and sprinkles turned into
full-fledged rain as the Sunline Hornets feature concluded, forcing
officials to pull the plug on the program with Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen and
Coca-Cola IMCA SportMods waiting in staging.
Hochstetler Towing, “the Official Towing Service Provider of Hawkeye Downs
Speedway,” presented Papa John’s Cup/ I-Wireless Championship Series action
Friday night along with their annual Bike Giveaway. 25 lucky kids had their
names drawn for a bike or scooter as part of the evenings’ program.
On the track, Zach Burhite brought home some hardware for the mantle by
winning the Sunline Hornets Promoter’s Choice Trophy Dash. Each week
Promoter Mike Becker selects up to six cars from the pool of non-feature
winners for the dash.
Clint Houdek, piloting a car normally driven by Dave Ballstaedt, started on
point and brought home the checkers in the 15-lap Barron Motor Supply IMCA
Stock Cars feature, edging out point leader Bob Ahrendsen. Houdek survived
multiple cautions in the feature which seemed to set the tone for the rest
of the night. One of those cautions proved timely for Ahrendsen as he was
able to change a tire that was down, use the Aaraon’s Lucky Dog to get back
on the lead lap and then finish a strong second. Cory Houdek finished third
while Kurt Bohnsack and Brian Franks filled out the top of the order.
The Budweiser Modifieds feature got off to a shaky start as the front row
consisting of Brian Allen and Arlo Becker collided on the front stretch as
they were taking the green flag. Both cars came to rest in turn one and were
heavily damaged.
The restart saw Ryan Luedtke and point leader Tim Plummer advance to the
front row. Plummer bolted into the lead at the drop of the green and went
unchallenged the rest of the way to pick up his eighth win of the season.
Luedtke remained in second, 1.4 seconds behind Plummer. Larry Clausen
crossed the stripe in third followed by Craig Bender and Steve Lindell.
The largest Barron Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock field of the 2010 season
took the green flag for their 15-lap feature. Rod Grother, who started on
the pole, built a big lead early but by lap six the field had tightened with
point leader Nathan Ballard sitting in second after making a big move during
a scramble for position. Caution waved for a spin with five laps remaining.
On the restart, Roland Bohnsack made a bold move for the lead leaving
Grother and Ballard behind. Ballard couldn’t mount a serious challenge for
the point as the final laps ticked off and Bohnsack, who hadn’t raced the
past couple weeks, held on for the win.
Ballard finished second, followed by Grother, Dave McCalla, and the winner
from two weeks ago, Deb Mefford.
Thor Anderson picked up his first Performance Concepts Late Model win of
2010 after taking the lead from Brad Osborn on lap eighteen. Anderson and
Brad Dvorak chased Osborn for the first half of the 30-lap feature which
included a couple cautions. Point leader Tim Plummer was also in the mix in
the first half of the race and he found himself in position to follow
Anderson around Osborn to secure the second spot.
Anderson built a 1.5 second point lead over Plummer as they took the
checkered flag, Osborn finished third and was followed across the line by
Brad Dvorak and Justin Jennings.
There was plenty of action once again in the Sunline Hornets feature but not
all of it was on the track as tempers flared after a couple racing
incidents. A couple early cautions kept the field tight and allowed Brad
Chandler to take the lead on lap five after starting in tenth. Chandler led
the rest of the way with his brother Nathan and Bryce bailey his closest
pursuers. Brad built a huge lead by the time the final lap ticked off the
board with Nathan scoring second. Bailey finished third while Chuck Hanson
was fourth and Rod Grother was fifth. The win was the third of the season
for Brad Chandler
The point leader, Dallas Chandler, dropped out of the race early which will
significantly tighten the point race.
Racing returns next Friday night when McGrath PowerSports will present the
seven regular divisions along with the McGrath PowerSports INEX Legends.
