LaCrosse heads IMCA national championship class of 2006
by: Bill Martin
VINTON, Iowa (Oct. 6) – A parade welcomed Benji LaCrosse home following his
IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals championship last year.
There’s no telling what the folks in Luxemburg, Wis., will do to celebrate his
latest accomplishment.
LaCrosse won IMCA’s national Modified crown, and is one of five first time
titlists enrolled in the championship class of 2006.
David and Donavon Smith of Lake City topped point standings for the Stock Car
and Hobby Stock divisions, respectively, the first time brothers have won
national IMCA championships the same season. The Smith family now owns four
titles, with younger brother Dustin accounting for the 2004 and 2005 Hobby Stock
honors.
Jason Mallicoat of Boone is national champ in the Karl Chevrolet Northern
SportMod division while Chris Graf of Glencoe, Minn., made the huge step from
rookie of the year to champion of the KSE Racing Products Sprint Car class.
Keith White of Academy, Texas, raced to his second straight championship in the
Jeff’s Performance Southern SportMods. Darrel DeFrance of Marshalltown, Iowa,
added the 2006 Late Model prize to the national title he won in 1993.
LaCrosse scored a career best dozen feature wins in racing to track titles at
car count rich Luxemburg Speedway and Seymour Speedway, earning his first
SuperFlow North Central Region championship in the process.
Track titles at Shelby County Speedway and Buena Vista Raceway, along with 18
feature victories pro-pelled David Smith to the top of the Jet Racing Northern
Region ranks for the first time.
Donavon Smith led all IMCA drivers with 40 feature wins, racking up crowns at
BVR, Marshalltown Speed-way and Shelby County.
Graf collected six checkers on the season, with both the Arlington Raceway and
Jackpot Junction titles to his credit.
Mallicoat enjoyed a banner campaign of his own, with 10 weekly feature wins, a
Super Nationals champi-onship and crowns at Boone Speedway and Marshalltown.
Duplicating his 28 wins last year, White ruled at Bonner’s Bellmead Speedway and
Heart O’ Texas Speedway, putting the exclamation point to his season with a
victory at last weekend’s Jeff’s Performance Southern SportMod Nationals.
Jay Kreft of Carleton, Neb., led the national point standings in the first
season for IMCA’s Sport Compact class.
Joining LaCrosse as SuperFlow Region champions were Dan Fitzgerald in the
Western, Johnny Saathoff in the Central, P.J. Egbert in the South Central and
Sean Lias in the Eastern.
Egbert’s regional crown was his career first; Fitzgerald won his third straight,
Saathoff his career fifth and Lias his career eighth.
Fitzgerald had a division best 31 feature wins this season, Saathoff 21, Egbert
16 and Lias 10.
Tom Earl III of Fort Worth, Texas, won nine times in repeating as champion of
the Destroyer Chassis Southern Stock Car Region.
The 2006 season was the first for a new national and regional point system
rewarding track champions with bonus points based in part on average weekly car
counts.
Final points races for the Modified, Sprint, SportMod, Stock and Hobby classes
were Sept. 24; local track officials have until Oct. 23 to notify the IMCA home
office of any corrections to race results that effect their top 15 point
standings before they are declared official.
Final Late Model point’s races were held Aug. 26. National, state and track
standings for that division are now official.
