Points penalty added to fine for use of traction control
devices at IMCA events
VINTON, Iowa (Dec. 14, 2006) – IMCA drivers caught using traction control
devices at sanctioned events will get socked in points as well as the pocketbook
beginning next season.
The 2007 rules for all classes will specify that drivers detected with traction
control devices at any point during sanctioned events will lose all points,
including any earned in special series, accumulated during the season in
addition to a $10,000 fine.
Previous rules had specified only the fine, levied for the first time following
a Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Model event in September. A Modified driver
at the Duel In The Desert special in Las Vegas last month was found to have a
traction control device mounted outside his ignition box before hot lapping.
“We are exploring ways to detect these devices, as well as educate local track
tech officials in how to find them,” IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett
Root said. “We are going to address more of the specifics in tech manuals we
prepare for sanctioned tracks. Discussions we have at upcoming trade shows with
manufacturers will also dictate the direction we go with ignition boxes in the
future.”
IMCA will also reserve the right to confiscate any traction control unit
discovered.
“The problem with our ignition box rules has been that they are not specific
enough. We allow a variety of components, which makes it difficult to inspect
them,” said Root. “There are five or six different ignition boxes that meet IMCA
specs but the difference in their features makes it harder for tech officials to
check for traction control units.”
