Blackbird Bend, Park Jefferson, Interstate add IMCA Northern
SportMods in 2007
ONAWA, Iowa (Dec. 14, 2006) – Three new sanctions for IMCA’s Karl Chevrolet
Northern SportMod division produce as many race night opportunities every
weekend next season in western Iowa and South Dakota.
The class joins programs on Fridays at Blackbird Bend Motorsports Speedway in
Onawa, and Saturdays at Park Jefferson Speedway and Sundays at Interstate
Speedway, both in Jefferson, S.D.
Park Jefferson and Interstate are the first South Dakota tracks to sanction the
division. Fans will get their first up close look at the Northern SportMods
during the April 6-7 Spring Thaw special at Park Jefferson.
“It’s the coming thing,” said PJ promoter Dennis Moore. “I think we’ll see a
number of drivers from other divisions race Northern SportMods next year.”
Opening night at Blackbird Bend is set for April 20, with the first points races
on April 22 at Interstate.
“Economics is a big factor and B modifieds are already a big class in this area.
Quite a few drivers have already con verted their cars to IMCA rules,”
Interstate promoter Greg Golden commented. “I think they’re the wave of the
future in this area.”
B modified drivers from the three tracks have already proven their mettle at the
IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nation als, landing six qualifying spots in Friday
night main events the last two years.
“I like the rules and the competitive nature of the class,” Blackbird Bend boss
Brad Appleton said. “With Park Jeffer son and Interstate sanctioned also, it’s
possible that the national champion could come out of the Siouxland area.”
