BOONE, Iowa (March 18) – Bill Haglund will become the new Saturday night voice at Boone Speedway. Recently unretired as sports editor for the Dallas County News and Northeast Dallas County Record, Haglund will be back at the mic starting with the season opening Super Nationals Shakedown special on April 4. “I’ve enjoyed auto racing for more than 60 years, and I’ve always enjoyed announcing,” said Haglund, first a regular in the booth at both Vinton Speedway and Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids while working for IMCA and Hawkeye Racing News. “The first race I announced was in Wausau, Wis., in 1973 and I thought it would be a one-time thing.” Instead, he called races all around the country during his IMCA stint. Closer to home, Haglund has been a weekly regular at eight tracks – most recently four years ago – and figures he’s announced at least one race at 25-30 speedplants in the state. His resume also includes announcing duties for the Iowa State Fair races in Des Moines and Iowa Public Television. Inducted last fall into the Waldorf College Athletic Hall of Fame and a recipient last week of a media award of excellence, presented during the Iowa Boys State Basketball Tournament, Haglund owns another claim to fame as the announcer for the first five IMCA Super Nationals. “It’s a great honor to have Bill come back to announcing at Boone Speedway,” promoter Robert Lawton said. “I consider Bill to be one of the five or six best announcers in the country and look forward to having him here for Super Nationals.” IMCA Modifieds, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods run at Boone through Sept. 5. The 27th annual IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals is scheduled for Sept. 7-12. “Bill is already well-known to many race fans around the state,” said IMCA President Kathy Root, “He knows an impressive number of drivers from Central Iowa and around the country, and I’m confident he’ll be a tremendous addition to weekly programs at Boone as well as Super Nationals.”
