Elliott shines at Hancock County’s Night of 1,000 Stars
BRITT, Iowa (Aug. 13) – The two drivers who slugged it out at the front of
last season’s Night of 1,000 Stars special at Hancock County Speedway were
at it again at this year’s event.
Mark Elliott caught Jay Noteboom for the lead shortly after the pit stop
halfway through the IMCA Modified 40-lapper, then survived late- race
mechanical issues while holding off Mark Noble for the Thursday night
victory.
The Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying win paid $3,950,
including $950 in lap money. Noble, John Logue, Noteboom and Kevin Stoa
rounded out the top five. Noteboom’s $2,950 share of the purse included
$2,050 in lap money.
Stoa raced his way into the top five after restarting in the rear following
a mid-race flat. Jeremy Mills was also set on fast forward, running sixth
after restarting at the back twice.
Mills drew the outside row one spot but was part of a multi-car tangle on
the opening circuit.
Noteboom went to the high side when the green flag came back out, pulling
away to most of a straightaway advantage over Logue and Noble before
catching up with backrunners on lap 14.
That big lead was erased by a lap 18 caution. Both Noble and Elliott passed
Logue before the mandatory lap 20 pit stop.
Stoa came to a stop with a flat tire soon after the race resumed.
Elliott worked past Noble into second, then drove past Noteboom and
across the scoring line before Nate Caruth and Joey Schaefer collided to
cause a lap 23 yellow.
Noble tried unsuccessfully to get inside Elliott in the final laps, but the
leader held on despite a broken bolt in the front suspension.
Mike Jergens took the lead on the ninth of 25 laps in the IMCA Sunoco Stock
Car feature and stayed in front the rest of the way for a $400 win.
Jergens was scrapping with Kevin Opheim before back-to-back cautions on lap
19. He got the better jump on the second restart and took the checkers in
front of Opheim, Chad Palmer, Dolphin and Travis Hoeft.
Originally scheduled for Aug. 6, the Night of 1,000 Stars program was
completed a week later after being postponed by rain.
