Stoa completes Super Nationals triple crown with Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational victory

BOONE, (Iowa (Sept. 11) – He has yet to qualify for this year’s main event, but Kevin Stoa says he’s got a fast car.

He proved that by winning the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational Friday night, during the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals at Boone Speedway.

Stoa led all but one time around the track in the 10-lap contest, earning $1,450 and completing the Super Nationals triple crown in the process. He’d won the main event in 2000 and last year, and the Harris Auto Racing Race of Champions in 2005.

He was fifth in his one previous All-Star outing, in 2006.

“It’s always a wonderful thing to win a race at Boone because you run against very, very tough competition,” he said. “Having only raced about five times this year and showing up here with an Evolution car I’ve never driven before, it feels pretty good to come out on top.”

Stoa started outside row one, with David Murray Jr., the only other driver to have won all of the three headline events for Modifieds at Super Nationals, on the pole.

After a quick caution, he got the edge over Murray with Jay Noteboom close behind in third.

Noteboom, like Murray a two-time All-Star winner, charged into second on lap five and was scored just ahead of Stoa on lap six, then spun out of the lead on the second set of turns.

After trading paint with Jeff Taylor on the restart, Stoa pulled away from the field as Noteboom spun again and Murray was shown the way to the pits for questionable driving.

Taylor did his best to stay with Stoa but didn’t have enough laps to reel him in. Chris Bragg, Dale Caswell and Brian Mullen rounded out the top five.

Stoa’s victory puts him on the ballot for the 2010 invitational.

Two drivers from each of the five IMCA ButlerBuilt regions for Modifieds were elected, in balloting conducted this summer through the IMCA website, to start the sixth annual race. Candidates had won a regional or state championship, or a special event paying $1,000 or more.

Nine states were represented in the field.
