FAIRMONT, Minn. (Nov. 23) – The IMCA Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod division will make its Minnesota debut in 2010, on opening night at Fairmont Raceway. Promoter Joe Ringsdorf announced that both the open wheeled class and sanctioned Hobby Stocks would join Friday programs at the fast half- mile dirt oval in early April. Algona Raceway and I-35 Speedway in Mason City, both in Iowa and also promoted by Ringsdorf, will add the two classes as well. All three tracks sported B modified and non-sanctioned hobbies, along with IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars this season. “We’ve been running two classes that were already very similar to IMCA divisions. Local drivers will benefit by com peting under those rules and for shares of post-season point funds,” Ringsdorf said. “They’ve always gone to the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals and done well and I expect that to continue.” Another plus, he noted, was that the sanction would bring in new drivers chasing IMCA points. Twenty-five tracks in six states hosted sanctioned events for the Northern SportMods in 2009. “Northern SportMods have been our fastest growing division, in terms of both new tracks and new drivers, the past two seasons,” IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root said. “Our Hobby Stocks have posted consistent numbers over the same period and we’re pleased to resume sanctioning the class at these facilities.” Weather and track conditions permitting, opening night at Fairmont is scheduled for next April 2. Algona opens on April 3 and I-35 on April 4. End-of-season race dates are to be determined. Modified points earned at all three tracks apply in IMCA’s ButlerBuilt North Central Region. Stock Car points and Hobby Stock points figure toward Jet Racing Northern Region standings in those respective divisions.
