Hull wards off Sprint Invasion and defends Lincoln Speedway
turf
By Jake Croxton
LINCOLN, Ill. (May 6, 2006) – Jerrod Hull made his first 2006 Ideal Ready Mix
Sprint Invader start count as he overtook pole starter Randy Plath and led the
final 19 laps to score the $1,200 payday.
“We concentrated on the feature after the Dash,” commented Hull. “Scott Bonar
tuned it up and told me not to worry about it. Sure enough, we were really nice
in the feature.”
Plath and Brian Hetrick led the field of 20-strong to the start. The Strong
hurst, Ill. veteran got the jump and led his first A-feature laps of 2006. Mean
while, Hull worked his way to second and maneuvered past Plath at the completion
of lap 6.
“I was taking my time early on, making sure we didn’t get into any mishaps
there,” observed Hull. “After we got to the lead, the car just kept getting
better and better. We could get through lapped traffic really well and we just
had a blast all night long.”
Manny Rockhold slowed the field for the first time on lap 8 after coasting to a
stop in turn two. On there start, Korey Weyant emerged from his tenth starting
position and looked to be reeling in the Sikeston, Missouri pilot as they diced
through traffic.
“(Finishing second) feels really good,” commented Weyant. “We had the car hooked
up tonight and I had alot of good guys behind me.” Curtis Boyer and Tony Daniels
tangled in turn one to slow the pace for the second time on lap 17. Before the
field could get alap in, Matt Krieger ended his night upside down.
“The yellows flags hurt me,” continued Weyant. “I feel that I was faster in
lapped traffic. If we’d have caught back up to the traffic I think I could have
got him, but we were even on long runs.”
Plath’s night turned sour to bring out the final caution of the evening. That
set up the final eight-lap dash to the checkers. Hull set sail with the open
track and cruised to win ahead of Weyant and points leader Matt Sutton.
“We did okay,” said Sutton of the run. “We lost ourbrakes with about eight to
go. I don’t know if we had anything for them. I think we were a third-place car
tonight.”
Chris Urish brought the 77U home in fourth and Bobby Hawks nipped Hetrick at the
line to complete the top five.
During the B-Main, both Seth Wilke and Nick Guernsey flipped in separate
incidents. Guernsey was treated and released on site, but Wilke was transported
to a Springfield hospital for further evaluation. Wilke was awake and talking to
medical crews on scene but was complaining of neck and back pain. More updates
will be dispersed as they become available.
