Marty Thompson Wins Quad City Speedway's Ron Weedon Memorial
Race
by Ed Potter
EAST MOLINE, IL (May 7, 2006) - Sunday at Quad City Spedway in East Moline was
not only the points opening night, it was also Quad City Speedway's leg of the
Ron Weedon Memorial weekend of racing. Donovan Lodge grabbed the early lead of
tahe Open Wheel Modified reature with Jim Willert taking over on lap two. Pole
sitter Marty Thompson moved into second on lap three and wouldn't let Willert
shake him. The two circled the quarter mile oval pretty mush side by side with
Willert using the low line and Thompson in the high line until a sixteenth lap
caution. On the restart Thompson moved out front and had the lead on the white
flag lap when Willert spun in turn four taking three other cars with him ending
tahe race. Lodge held on for second followed by Jerry Durbin, Milo Veloz Jr. and
Doug Crampton, in that order. Mike Zemo Jr;s sisth pace finish was good enough
to get him the trophy for the combined best finishes for the Ron Weedon Memorial
weedend. Thompson and Daron Oberbroeckling took the qualifying heat wins.
Aggresion seemed to be the word of the day in the IMCA Late Model feature as the
caution flag flew a total of eight times before the fourth lap was scored. Rick
Wages used his front row starting spot to take the lead as things finally
settled down and racing got underway. On the fifteenth lap Wages coasted to a
stop with mechanical problems on the back stretch. On the restart Eric Gustaf
moved out front and held on for the victory, holding off the challenges of Rob
Toland through the end. On lap twenty Ray Guss Jr. moved into take third
followed by Mike Cothron with Bobby Toland rouding out the top five. Mike Murphy
Jr., Rob Toland and Jim Sandusky won the heats.
A three car pile-up in the Street Stock feature before a lap was scored saw Rob
Henry climb the wall in turn one and roll his car leaving it settled on it's
side. On the drop of the green first heat winner, Dustin Spicer took the lead
with second heat winner, Buck Harmening taking over on lap three. At lap eight
Spicer moved back into the lead, but by this time Jeff Stevens had moved up to
join the battle for the point. Stevens worked his way out front on lap eleven,
but Spicer retired with mechanical problems on lap thirteen. Stevens held on for
thewin with Korey Peterson second and Randy Exline third. Harmening held on for
fourth with Chris Hambright fifth.
Second B Modified heat winner, Craig Crawford took the lead of athe feature and
looked to have things pretty much in his control. Crawford bobbled cooming down
the front chute on lap nine and Mitch Moraris charged out front, despite going
to the rear on a third lap restart. Sixteen year old Morris took the win with
Crawford holding on for second. It appeared Jordan Schram took third, but he was
found light in post race inspection turning third over to Brad Pershy. First
heat winner, Jason Pershy was fourth with Jerry Bailey Jr. fifth.
