Young Morris and Young Gustaf Each Make Third Return Trips to
Victory Lane
by Ed Potter
EAST MOLINE, Il. (June 11, 2006) - Quad City Speedway fans owe Kevin and Carrie
Feller a thank you as they worked thier butts off Sunday to put on a racing
program after Saturday's rains. And a great show it waqs. Jimmy Comins used his
pole starting spot to tke the early lead of aathe B Modified feature, but some
early cations let nineth place starter, Mitch Morris move forwarad. On the last
restart at lap five, Morris moved out front and never looked back for his third
point race win of the year. Brad Pershy put on a hard charge, but had to settle
for second with Greg Durbin third, Jerry Bailey Jr fourth and Craig Crawford
fifth. Pershy and George Hubbard were the heat winners.
On the drop of the green flag of the third IMCA Late Model heat race Jason
Masengarb Barrel rolled his car about three times coming off of turn four. Jason
was all right and walked back to the pit area. First heat winner, John Freeman
took the eaarly lead of the feature as a second lap restart sent point leader,
Kevin Blum to the pits with broken rear suspension. After a sixth lap restart
Freeman had the father and son team of second heat winner, Ron Gustaf and third
heat winner, Eric Gustaf on his tail putting the pressure on. On lap nine Eric
got by Ron then charged out front on lap eleven. One lap later Ron moved by
Freeman into second as father chased son the rest of the way. Eric went on for
his third win this season with Ron second. Freeman held on for third holding off
the advances of fourth place finisher Tob Toland. Cory Goldbeck rounded out the
top five.
The Midwest Jalopies made a visit to the Speedway Sunday night and Oak Brook,
Illinois driver, Phil Claussen took the heat and the feature in a car he had
just purchased on a trip to New York as a spectater. Terry Mattly was second
with Rodney Haack third, Butch Dunn fourth and B.J. Haack fifth.
First Open Wheel Modified heat winner, Richie Smith took the lead of the
feature, but was later retired to the pits along with second heat winner, Daron
Oberbroeckling in a seventh lap restart. The restart was actually for Jerry
Durbin who rolled his modified on the front stretch. Jerry rode back to the pit
area on a golf cart, but I didn't get a chance to talk to the EMTs on his
condition after the races. It is believed he went to the hospital for a check
up. Donovan Lodge was leading at this point and from the restart on had to hold
off the hard advances of Jeff Morris. Lodge got his first win of the season with
Morris a strong second. Brandon Durbin was third with Jim Willert fourth after
being involved in the second lap caution with Smith and Oberbroeckling. Ray Cox
Jr took fifth.
Second Street Stock heat winner, Randy Exline led the feature flag to flag for
his first Quad City Speedway win of the year. In a hard fought battle for second
third heat winner, Dave Wadsager prevailed and held off Rob Henry who took
third. Aaron Burroughs and Bruce Fosdyck ronded out the top five. Ron Doolittle
won the other heat.
