Morris Picks Up His Third Win as Dickey, Harmening and Murphy
Get Thier First Wins
by Ed Potter
EAST MOLINE, IL. (June 18, 2006) - It was a beautiful afternoon Sunday, Father's
Day at Quad City Speedway and stayed that way for the evening race prgram with a
good crowd and some really great racing. One of the best IITI-Reynold's Ford
Open Wheel Modified feature was a highlight of the program as the racers ran a
clean and fast feature race. First heat winner, Richie Smith took the early lead
with second heat winner, Jeff Morris coming from nineth place to take over on
lap four. On a fifth lap restart Donovan Lodge took over the point, but couldn't
hold it long as Morris was on a mission. On lap eight Morris went back to the
point with Lodge in tow. Lodge continued to try but had to settle for second as
Morris went on to take his third Quad City feature of the season. Milo Veloz Jr
came from the last place starting spot to bring home a third place finish over
Jim Willert and Mike Zemo Jr.
The Best Choice- Racer's Edge B Modified feature had a rough time getting going
with six cautions in the first four laps but after that point it went on
non-stop. Greg Durbin came from his fourth place starting spot to take the early
lead with Doug Curless taking over on a third lap restart. On the last restart
on lap four Mitch Morris went to the front with Kevin Dickey right on his tail.
Dickey moved out front on lap six and then had to hold Morris off the rest of
the way. As the two race side by side with Morris on the bottom and Dickey on
the top Morris could get up beside Dickey but couldn't get by. Dickey took his
first win of the season with Morris a close second. Curless took third with
Durbin holding on for fourth and Jerry Bailey Jr fifth. Bailey and Brad Pershy
took the heat wins.
After Joining Fred Remley and Ron Gustaf as a heat winner, Mike Murphy Jr went
on to come from third place starting spot to lead the Feature flag to flag for
his first Quad City Speedway win of the year. With Murphy having a nice lead the
real battle was going on behind him for the runner-up position. Fred Remley held
it for the first nine laps with Kevin Blum moving into second on lap ten. This
battle wasn't over yet as Rob Toland took over second on lap eighteen. Toland
held on to take the spot with Remley third, Blum fourth and Ray Guss Jr. taking
fifth.
The J & J Camper Street Stock feature was also one of thier best of the year as
it ran with only one caution for the entire race. First heat winner, Chris
Hambright took the early lead with second heat winner, Ron Doolittle taking over
on lap five. On lap seven Buck Harmening moved into second and strarting putting
the pressure on Doolittle. As Doolittle worked the bottom and Harmening the top
side Harmening got closer and closer, finally edging out front on the thirteenth
lap of the fifteen lapper. Harmening got his first Quad City win with Doolittle
second, Randy Exline third, Korey Peterson fourth and Hambright holding on for
fifth.
During intermission some drivers went to the stands taking up a collection for
driver Jerry Durbin, who was injured at the Speedway last week when he rolled
his car on the front stretch. $1,332.26 dollars was raised to help with Jerry's
expenses.
