Father and Son Team Both Win Caution Filled Features at
Quad City Speedway
by Ed Potter
EAST MOLINE, IL. (July 16, 2006) - Not all the features were filled with
cautions Sunday night at Quad City Speedway. The fifteen lap Street Stock
ffeature only had three and one of them was for debris, and the twenty-five lap
IMCA Late Model feature only had two with the last one ending the race. But, the
Open Wheel Modified feature took eight cautions to run twenty laps while the
fifteen lap B Modified feature took eight to get through. It was not the first
night of the racing season that Jeff Moris and son, Mitch Morris both won thier
respective features, but I bet they didn't think it would take so long to do on
such a hot night. Front row starter, Donovan Lodge led the first lap of the
IITI-Reynold's Ford Open Wheel Modified feature after two cautions flew before a
lap was scored. On lap two eighth place starter, and first heat winner, Jeff
Morris took over the lead and then two more cautions flew. Morris led the field
off on the restart and things seemed to settle down until the mid-race point. At
lap ten fourth place runner, Daron Oberbroeckling brought out another caution
The seventh caution came before another lap could be scored involving early
leader, Lodge and second place runner Shaune Lewis. One lap later the last
caution flew with Morris still in control. On the restart Morris had Milo Veloz
Jr and third heat winner, Jim Willert right on his tail. With four laps to go
Willert moved into second and held on to take the spot behind Morris until the
checkers flew. It was Morris' fifth feature win at Quad City Speedway this
season. Willert was second with Veoloz third and Brandon Durbin fourth.
Oberbroeckling was fifth. Ray Cox Jr won the other heat.
Pole Sitter, Jason Bielema grabbed the early lead of the Best Choice-Racer's
Edge B Modified feature until lap three when cautions started falling after a
fifth caution Mitch Morris took over the point on the fifth lap restart. Despite
three more cautions Morris held on to the lead the rest of the way to take his
sixth win of the season. Craig Crawford was second with Greg Durbin third, Doug
Curless fourth and Jerry Bailey Jr fifth. Morris and Brad Pershy won the heats.
On a fourth lap restart Rob Henry took the lead of the J & J Camper Street Stock
feature from Toby Sharp and soon had Randy Exline and Korey Peterson putting the
pressure on. On lap eight Exline had moved out front when the race's last
caution flew putting Henry back out front for the restart. The rest of the race
was a true three car battle with the last lap seeing Henry, Exline and Peterson
coming off turn four in a pack on the last lap. Exline took his second win of
the year bringing Peterson by Henry with him. Buck Harmening took fourth with
Dave Wadsager fifth. Sharp, Peterson and Chris Hambright took the heat wins.
Third place starter, Andy Nexworski grabbed the early lead of the IMCA feature,
but a fourth lap restart put Ray Guss Jr right on his tail. For the next twelve
circuits of the speedway this is the way they ran. On lap nineteen Guss moved
out front and held on for the victory. The race ended on the white flag lap as
the race's only other caution flew. It was Guss' first Quad City feature win of
the year. Nezworski held on for second with Rob Toland third, Hershel Roberts
fourth and Jim Sandusky fifth. Heat wins went to Jason Parrish, John Freeman and
Toland.
