MACON SPEEDWAY SATURDAY NIGHT – MERIDIAN SCHOOL NIGHT, SALUTE TO MOMS, CRAZY CHICKS N CARS
by: Tonya Moschell

MACON, IL (May 12) -  Macon Speedway’s Racing on Saturday night was once again exciting and played to a full house of fans. 110 cars were able to take advantage of Macon’s new pit area and tonight’s tribute to the Meridian schools and Mom was fun for all.

With the sun going down over the backstretch, the heat races were warming up the track. Underdogs pushed their way to a few impressive finishes. Brian McLemore of Decatur held off heavy favorite Kyle Logue for hat most have seemed like an endless number of laps.

As the feature contenders were being worked out, Macon Speedway featured the Crazy Chicks N Cars race, raced by won by a stretch by Angela Reed. Dixie Kreher finished in second place.

The feature races started strong with a fiery Sportsman race, lead by four different drivers. The number 27 of Greg Kimmons squeezed by for the lead of a race that was led mostly by Norm Wood out of Sullivan. Third place finisher Dave Smith stayed with the leaders through the race, shooting his car around the outside of every turn.

Kyle Logue of Cisco won his fourth straight Modified feature race by starting from the pole position, and leading every lap. Everyone wanted to see who would challenge Logue. Al Crawley from Decatur looked like the premiere challenger. Crawley used the high, fast outside line, moving his car from fourth to second place in only a few laps. But at lap 13 Crawley’s car lost its grip and clipped the turn two wall, ending his night. Jeremy Nichols, second place, and Dave Crawley Jr., third place, couldn’t catch up.

The street stock feature race was led mostly by Decatur’s Steve Ewing and his #95 “Lightning McQueen” car. Ewing moved to the outside to move from third to the lead and never looked back. The smooth driving Mike Pickering couldn’t run down the leader. Brian Cassell, from Decatur, placed third.

Terry Babb started on the pole for the Late Model feature race. Babb had won his heat by using the outside of the track to make a last lap pass. In the feature, his car wouldn’t stick. Babb tried the outside lane a few times without any luck and resorted to playing defense on the bottom of the track. Kyle Logue’s car had plenty of grip, and used the speed of the outer line to pass Babb. Babb settled into second and got a few passing opportunities from caution flags, but couldn’t capitalize. Mike Hammerle of St. Charles, Missouri placed third.

With 27 hornets racing at Macon this evening, the racing fans got an extra hornet feature. In the first of two features, Lance Johnson took the lead early. A few laps in, Johnson’s car began to spew white smoke out behind him. “I think I started losing the clutch.” Johnson remarked. His engine held on long enough to get him the win. Michael Pundt and James Hankins were the runners-up. The second hornet feature was dominated by Joe Reed’s number 22 that gripped the bottom of the track. Weekly racing at Macon Speedway features five UMP sanctioned divisions: Late Model, Modified, Sportsman, Street Stock and Hornet. New for 2007 is the addition of the C.A.R.S. Late Models.
