STEVE SHEPARD, JR. SWEEPS LITE BEER TWIN 50’s AT MACON
SPEEDWAY
by: Tonya Moschell
MACON, Ill. (June 9) - Miller Lite sponsored the Lite Beer Twin 50’s at Macon
Speedway Saturday Night, on a day with near perfect racing weather.
The Raminator monster truck made an appearance on the track as well. With Mark
Hall at the wheel, Raminator crushed four cars under the cheers of a packed
house of fans. Melissa Johnson of Kincaid, IL, went home the lucky winner of a
previously owned Chevrolet courtesy of Decatur Used Cars in the second Kenny’s
Crazy Car Caper.
The Lite Beer Twin 50’s were dominated by Steve Sheppard Jr. from New Berlin who won both races and earned himself a $500 bonus. In the first of two Late Model tests of endurance, Sheppard Jr. lapped every car with the exception of #40 Greg Kimmons and #96 Cory Daugherty, who Sheppard Jr. was right behind at the end of the race. Jamie Zidar was Sheppard’s primary challenger in Twin 50 number two. Both Sheppard Jr. and Zidar kept getting held up by lapped traffic, but Sheppard’s car was too good on the outside of the track for Zidar to catch up. Cory Daugherty finished second and fourth in Twin 50’s.
Macon Speedway ran semi-features in both the BARBECK Communications Modified class and street stocks. Dennis Vandermeersch won the modified semi-feature being trailed by Steve Shaw from Mount Zion who poured smoke from his car through the majority of the race. The street stock semi went to Justin Hill who led from green-to-checkered flag with Jim Cardoni and Wayne Orrick finishing second and third.
The Sportsman feature race was won by Greg Kimmons who squeezed by Dave Smith on the inside of the track. Scott Landers from Taylorville finished in third place. For the BARBECK Communications Modifieds, Jim Leka from Illiopolis held off several pass attempts by regular favorite Kyle Logue who just couldn’t find the grip he needed around the bottom of the track to make the pass. Steve Ewing again dominated the Street Stock feature in the Lightning McQueen replica followed by Tyler Blankenship in second and Larry Russell, Jr. in third.
The four-cylinder Hornets had two separate features. The first was a tight race between Fred Reed Jr. and Bruce Dulgar, but was won on an exciting late race pass by Dulgar. The second Hornet feature was dominated by Jeff Dodd. Todd Rush finished behind Dodd and Mike Bell drove his #61 car into third place.
NASCAR Stars Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader, Tony Stewart and local Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Macon Speedway in January of 2007.
Macon Speedway – racing every Saturday Night – is proud to be part of the
