Gustaf Grabs First QCR Win in ‘07
by: Brian Stuart
ALEDO, IL (June 17) - Even with it being Father’s Day and 90 plus degrees
outside, 76 cars still packed the pits Sunday night. The show got rolling with
three heat races in the Best Choice Meat Market / Racers Edge B-Modifieds. Craig
Crawford in the 29 took heat one, Brad Pershy in the 15 took heat two, and John
Ahlers in the 67 won heat three. In the Fields of Pizza Street Stocks, Gerald
Ward in the 3D won heat one and Tom Maupin in the 11M took heat two. In the
A-Modifieds, the 75 of Thad Wilson won the first heat and Jeff Morris in the 86
won heat two. Jason Bahrs in the 6 won the first heat in the Builders World IMCA
Late Models and Hershel Roberts in the 58 took the second heat. The 125 of Todd
Sibley won the Stout Distributing 4 Cylinder heat.
The Best Choice Meat Market / Racers Edge B-Modifieds ran their feature first.
They did something they hadn’t done all season; they ran flag to flag with no
cautions. At the drop of the green John Ahlers in the 67, Brad Pershy in the 15,
and Craig Crawford in the 29 separated themselves from the pack. Before long
Ahlers proved he was the man to beat and starting pulling away and building a
big lead. Pershy and Crawford continued they battled for second. In the
meantime, Greg Durbin in the 8 started picking off spot after spot. By the end
of the feature Durbin had went from 16th to 6th. Ahlers went unchallenged the
rest of the race and took home the victory with Pershy taking second and
Crawford taking third.
The Fields of Pizza Street Stocks were up next. When the green waved Matt Werner
in the 93 jumped out to the lead. Last week’s winner Aaron Burroughs in the 68A
started moving through the pack right away and before long he was up towards the
front chasing Werner. At one point there was five car battle for third also
well, with Rick Schriner in the 8, Dustin Spicer in the 19S, Rob Henry in the
00, Tony VonDresky in the 000, and Gerald Ward in the 3D. Finally Henry was the
one that came out on the top of that battle and he set his sights on Werner and
Burroughs but it was too late. Werner would take the checkered flag followed by
Burroughs and then Henry.
The A-Modifieds hit the track next running for $500 to win and $50 to start.
Once they lined up for the feature you knew the winner was probably coming from
the front. Kevin Blum in the 1 was sitting on the pole with Jeff Morris in the
86 outside of him. Right away Blum and J. Morris started pulling away from the
field. While those raced away, Thad Wilson the 75 was flying through field.
Donovan Lodge in the 32 was moving through the pack as well after spinning and
going to the rear. Up at the front of the race Blum started pulling away from J.
Morris but when lapped traffic got involved J. Morris was able to close down
Blum’s lead. Blum was held him off and took home the win. J. Morris finished
second with Thad Wilson coming in third. Donovan Lodge went from 15th to 6th.
The Builders World IMCA Late Models were next. Mike Guldenpfennig in the 91 took
the lead right away from his outside front row starting spot. Jason Bahrs in the
6 immediately started his charge to the front. Things were pretty calm until a
caution came out with 9 laps to go. On the restart Guldenpfennig maintained his
lead while LeRoy Brenner in the 53 and Ron Gustaf in the 90X put on a great show
for second. Meanwhile Bahrs had made his way from 10th to challenge Hershel
Roberts in the 58 for 4th. Rob Toland in the 39 had moved his way through the
field too. It looked like Guldenpfennig was going to win until coming out of
turn 4 to take white flag a smoked start pouring out of the 91. He held onto the
lead for as long as he could but going down the backstretch R. Gustaf got around
him as well as Brenner and Bahrs. R. Gustaf would take the checkered with
Brenner in the second and Bahrs in the third. R. Toland ended up finishing 5th
from his 11th starting spot.
The Stout Distributing 4 Cylinders ran their feature last. The D26 of Wade Dahl
proved he was still the man to beat even if he had a new car. Dahl had his new
lime green D26 at the track Sunday but it didn’t look any different then the old
silver one. While he was pulling away from the pack, Rob Harding in the 7 was in
second until his right rear came completely off. The 17M of Mike Morrow tried to
give Dahl a run for his money but Dahl held him off to take another win at QCR.
Morrow took second followed by Shawn Pappas in the 13.
Everyone from Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank all the fans,
drivers, and sponsors for Sunday another great night.
Don’t forget, this Tuesday June 19th, the Aledo Raceway Park will host the 1st
Annual Topless Modified Series Summer Sizzler. The best modified drivers in the
area will be racing for $1000 to win and $100 to start. This race will also
serve as the make-up date for the Modified Memorial Mania that was postponed due
to rain at ARP. Also, the TMS licensed, pre-entered driver, with the highest
point average from the Modified Memorial Mania at QCR and the Summer Sizzler,
Tuesday night, will receive a bonus of $300. Running as well Tuesday night will
be the lightening quick Mod Lites, ultra competitive Cruisers, and the fan
favorite 4 Cylinders. Rain has been the biggest enemy of the Aledo Raceway Park
this season but hopefully it stays away because the excitement is in the air for
this race. So come on out and spend a Tuesday night at the Aledo Raceway Park.
