MACON, IL (July 28) - A whopping 121 car field showed up to race on the dirt
of Macon Speedway Saturday. This week's racing finished a two-day Modified event
in conjunction with Morgan County Speedway. Three Dog Night sponsored tonight's
events which included an intermission Wiener dog race courtesy of DeLong Bed and
Biscuit and a $100 prize purse donated by Morgan Distributing.
The BARBECK Communications feature was lead from start to finish by Dick Taylor
from Springfield who earned himself $1,500 in the effort. Jeff Leka finished in
second place after getting through a tough field of competitors in the top five.
Jim Leka held off a frustrated Kyle Logue for third place by blocking the bottom
of the track Logue runs successfully so often.
Dick Taylor and Jeff Leka will be the majority winners of the $800 purse for
leading the points between Friday’s race at Morgan County Speedway and tonight
feature race. Jeff Leka won on Friday and finished second on Saturday while
Taylor finished in second Friday and won the feature at Macon.
Steve Sheppard Jr. started from the pole in the Chevrolet Late Model feature and
that usually means he's going to win it. Tonight was no exception. Sheppard once
again lived up to expectations by winning another feature race at Macon. Mike
Hammerle passed a few cars late in the race to grab second place in a tough
Sportsman race.
Steve Sheppard Jr. won both of the Firecracker 50's in July and was leading
by a stretch in the Herald and Review 100 last week before breaking a shock.
Wes O'Dell won the Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman feature in front of track
regular Greg Kimmons. O'Dell and Kimmons traded the spot again and again, but
O'Dell found his preferred line late in the race and drove away from the pack.
Jeff Graham from Stonington inherited third place after Dave Smith's #73P broke
down in the last few laps.
Greg Kimmons' second place finish breaks a three-way tie for the points lead
that he shared with Mike Pickering and Scott Landers.
Steve Ewing won his fourth consecutive Street Stock feature race at Macon
Speedway and Bruce Dulgar won his third consecutive hornet feature. Ewing’s #95
“Lightning McQueen” decaled car has taken the checkered flag first in nine
feature races this season. Bruce Dulgar’s 4 cylinder has won five times in 2007.
Fans got a blast from the past as racing veterans Roger Drake and Jim Leka found
themselves in a one-on-one race in BARBECK Communications Modified heat #3. Leka
passed the third place car with only a handful of laps left and looked ahead to
Drake's significant lead. Drake crossed the finish line in first with a charging
Leka right on his bumper.
