Five Track Champions Crowned at Quad City Raceway
EAST MOLINE, IL (Aug 26) - On a full moon night in East Moline, 80 plus cars
parked in the pits, waiting to run for the Quad City Raceway Season
Championship. The night got under way with the Stouts Distributing 4 Cylinders.
Heat one went to the 7 of Rob Harding and heat two went to the 13 of Shawn
Pappas. Up next were the Fields of Pizza Street Stocks. The 63 of Buck Harmening
took the first heat and the 68 of Aaron Burroughs won heat two. Then the
A-Modifieds took to the track and Doug Crampton in the 40 and Kevin Blum in the
1 each won a heat. The Racers Edge B-Modifieds were next with three heats. The
first heat went to Jerry Bailey Jr. in the 88J, second heat to Brad Pershy in
the 15, and the third heat to Jake Waterman in the 10. The Builders World IMCA
Late Models ran their heats last with Nate Beuseling in the 46 winning the first
one and Bobby Toland in the 39T winning the second one.
The Stouts Distributing 4 Cylinders came out next to run their feature event.
Neither Wade Dahl in the D26 or Todd Sibley in the 125 took the front row
challenge. The race got started with some excitement. Coming out of turn 2 the
13 of Shawn Pappas and the 77 of Robert Belonga got together and Belongas 77
rolled. Belonga said he was okay but was taken to the hospital for precautionary
reasons. Once the racing got going again Dahl took the early lead with Sibley
and Pappas right on his bumper. Eventually Sibley fell off the pace giving
Pappas the chance to challenge for the lead. Finally Pappas would get by Dahl
and start pulling away. Meanwhile Rob Harding in the 7 started giving Dahl all
he could handle. Lap after lap Dahl and Harding traded positions. Up front
Pappas would take the checkered flag, Harding would hold off Dahl for second.
Mike Wisdom in the 112X and R.J. Gonzalez in the 39G rounded out the top five.
The Fields of Pizza Street Stocks were up next. Once again neither Rob Henry in
the 00 or Aaron Burroughs in the 68 took the front row challenge. Right at the
drop of the green Henry and Burroughs began their battle. Henry was running high
and Burroughs was running low. Finally Burroughs would get by Henry and start
building a lead. Tony VonDresky in the 000 and Buck Harmening in the 63 were
starting to make their moves to first at this time too. After another roll over,
this time by Rick Schriner in the 8 (he was okay), Henry and VonDresky began
racing hard for second while Burroughs continued to build a lead. Matt Werner in
the 93 also started coming towards the front. Then on a restart after a few
cautions, Henry and Burroughs got together in the turn one causing Burroughs to
spin. In frustration Burroughs got out of his car causing an instant
disqualification. Henry was sent to the back and then there was a new front of
Harmening and Toby Spicer in the 7. This was actually the original sixth row.
This was all Harmening needed, he grabbed the lead and didnt look back.
Harmening held off a late charge by the 1 of Terry Mattly and took home the
victory. Mattly took second followed by Spicer, Rob Nylin in the 1X, and Nathan
Hall in the 40.
Now came out the A-Modifieds and Kevin Blum in the 1 decided to take the
challenge and go to the back and try to double his money. Brandon Durbin elected
to stay on the front row. So that bumped Jeff Morris up to the front row with B.
Durbin. Once the green waved J. Morris took the lead and never gave it up. B.
Durbin stayed on him the whole race but couldnt quite make the move for lead.
Blum was very fast and did everything he could to get to the front and put on an
outstanding show. He was able to take advantage of few cautions but in the end
he ended up fourth. J. Morris went to take the checkered flag followed by B.
Durbin, Mike Zemo Jr. in the Z, Blum, and Jordan Schram in the 92S.
Due to time concerns the Builders World IMCA Late Models ran next to make sure
their race got in because the IMCA National points ended Sunday night. Neither
Rob Toland in the 39 or Jason Bahrs in the 6 took the front row challenge. Right
away R. Toland proved he was the man to beat. After holding off an early threat
from Bahrs and Shawn Mulvany in the 70, R. Toland pulled away from the pack and
lead flag to flag. For the whole feature Bahrs and Mulvany went at it for
second. R. Toland took the win followed by Mulvany, Bahrs, Andy Nezworski in the
7, and Ron Gustaf in the 90X.
The Racers Edge B-Modified were last onto the track for their feature race.
Both Greg Durbin in the 8 and Craig Crawford in the 29 decided to stay on the
front row and not take the challenge. Durbin grabbed the early lead with
Crawford and Jerry Bailey Jr. in the 88J right behind him racing side by side
for second. Meanwhile Jake Waterman in the 10 was coming through the pack with
sight set on Durbin. Waterman would eventually get by Crawford for second and
start working on Durbin but after the last of several cautions the race was
called because of curfew. Durbin took home the win followed by Waterman,
Crawford, Jimmy Comins in the 83, and Chad Tomlinson in the 75.
