Quad City Raceway Hall of Fame Classic

EAST MOLINE, IL (Sept. 23) - Toland & Gustin Sweep the Hall of Fame Weekend

Nearly 90 cars in four divisions entered the pits Saturday night to compete in the first annual Quad City Raceway Hall of Fame Classic. Saturday’s show included the B-Modifieds, Mod Lites, A-Modifieds, and the Late Models.

In the B-Modified feature Greg Durbin grabbed the early lead from his inside front row position. Meanwhile towards the back Jake Waterman was making his charge to the front. Before long Waterman was right on Durbin for the lead. They went side by side for several laps. Right behind them Chris Stein and Jerry Bailey Jr. were side by side for third. Bailey Jr. would get a flat tire ending his chances but Donovan Lodge picked up right where Bailey Jr. left off racing neck and neck with Stein. Back up front Durbin started to build a lead and would go on to take the checkered flag. Waterman took second followed by Stein, Lodge, and Doug Curless rounded out the top 5. Brad Lucy and Jake Waterman were the heat race winners.

In the Mod Lites Davenport’s Jeff Norton took advantage of his number one starting position and didn’t look back. J. Norton held off Scott Spink lap after lap. Chuck Mayerhofer made a run to the front as well with David Norton. D. Norton and Mayerhofer would race side by side for several laps battling for third. Back up front J. Norton would hold off Spink and took home the win. Spink would spin out losing his second position so Mayerhofer took second followed by Milo Veloz Jr. (first time in a Mod Lite), Mike Kennedy, from Boone, IA, and Shon Sanders rounded out the top five.

The A-Modified feature may have been the race of the night. Kevin Blum and Ryan Gustin would start side by side on the front and for every lap of the feature they would battle it out. Gustin wouldn’t let Blum get to far staying right on his bumper lap after lap. Gustin would follow Blum to the top side in turns one and two and then shoot to the bottom in turns three and four to try to get by Blum. Then would two laps to go Gustin finally made the move pass Blum coming out of turn four to take the lead. Gustin would hold off Blum to take the victory. Mike Zemo would take third followed by Donovan Lodge and Brandon Durbin.

Now the main event for Saturday night the open late models versus the spec late models. Ron Gustaf would take the early lead with Stephan Kammerer on him. But that wouldn’t last long as mechanical failures slowed R. Gustaf on the track to bring out the yellow. On the restart Rob Toland would take the lead with Kammerer on him. Ray Guss Jr. and Ace Ihm were already starting to make their way to the front. On this night R. Toland was untouchable and his lead began to get bigger and bigger. On a few restarts Ihm would give R. Toland everything he had but R. Toland would not be denied. R. Toland would go onto take the win. Ihm took second followed by Guss Jr., Mike Murphy Jr. who came from ninth, and Bobby Toland who came all the way from 14th to round out the top five.

Sunday’s program got underway with the inaugural class being inducted into the Quad City Raceway Hall of Fame. Among the inductees were Bob Eriksen, Shorty Bennett, Ray Guss Sr. Benny Hofer, Hershel Roberts, Gary Webb, and Ronnie Weedon. Matt Werner inducted Shorty Bennett, Bob Stogdell inducted Benny Hofer, Ray Guss Jr. inducted Ray Guss Sr., Kenny Roberts inducted Hershel Roberts, Billy Webb inducted Gary Webb, and Ron Williams inducted Ronnie Weedon. This was a very special event and all the drivers and fans really enjoyed it.

Sunday night’s event included the 4 Cylinders, Street Stocks, A-Modifieds, and Late Models.

In the 4 Cylinders Shawn Pappas dominated the race leading flag to flag with little to no challenge. Todd Sibley looked like he was going to have something for Pappas but his car broke early on. Rob Harding looked like he might have something for Pappas too but mechanical problems slowed his car. The highlight of the race was watching Harding trying to hold onto second for the last three or four laps. He was able to hold onto second followed by Chris James, Mike Morrow, and R.J. Gonzalez.

As usual the Street Stocks put on a great show for the fans. Rob Henry would take the early lead with Matt Werner close behind with Tony VonDresky on Werner. For most of the race it was Werner and Henry battling it out. Werner would eventually take the lead with VonDresky right there. Cory Bauer had an excellent run coming from 11th to race for second and third. Werner would hold off VonDresky and Bauer to take the win. Chris Desseyn and Mark Claeys would round out the top five.

The A-Modifieds were ready to run again and several drivers that pre-entered were eligible for a $500 bonus if they had the highest point average after both nights of racing. Once the green waved Thad Wilson grabbed the lead with John Bull second and Jim Sandusky and Ryan Gustin battling for third. After a yellow Bull challenged Wilson on the bottom for lead with Sandusky and Gustin right on their bumpers. Gustin make a move on the very top of track that impressed many and passed them all for the lead. Gustin would check out and take home the win again and the $500 bonus. Bull would take second followed by Marty Thompson, Kevin Blum, and Donovan Lodge who from the 13th.

Then the race everyone was waiting for, the 50 lap open late models versus spec late models. When the cars rolled up and started lining up it felt like the early 90’s at Quad City Raceway with Guss, Webb, Roberts, Cothron, Engelkins, Brenner, Gustaf, and Toland all in the same feature again. Ray Guss Jr. and Gary Webb would start on the front row together. Guss took the early lead while Webb and Darrel DeFrance fought for second. Rob Toland and Adam Oppendike would both get by Webb and DeFrance and start their own battle for second. After a few cautions Oppendike would get right on Guss’ bumper for the lead. Finally R. Toland took the bottom and got by Oppendike. He would use that same line and get by Guss for the lead. Much like the night before once R. Toland took over the lead there was no looking back. Guss ran second most of the race until lapped traffic wrecked in front of him and he had no where to go. Enough damage was done that Guss had to pull into the pits. So that left second place wide open and DeFrance and Oppendike began fighting for that. DeFrance would get the better of it and take second over. R. Toland would lead the rest of the way taking the win and the $1,000 bonus for the highest point average for the both nights. DeFrance would hold onto second followed by Oppendike, Mike Cothron who started 14th, and Dave Engelkins who started 15th.

Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank everyone that was involved with making this Hall of Fame weekend possible. We would also like to thank all the fans, drivers, and sponsors for making another weekend at Quad City Raceway successful.

The next event for Stuart Motorsports, Inc. will be the 2nd Annual Fall Harvest Shootout. This UMP Late Model show will pay $12,000 to the winner. This will be the biggest race Quad City Raceway has ever seen. Scott Bloomquist has already pre-entered along with several other top drivers from around the country. Also racing will be the 4 Cylinders running for $300 to win.
