Bahrs Wins Inaugural Street Stock Nationals
EAST MOLINE, IL (Oct 16) - Over 100 cars made their way to Quad City Raceway
Saturday, October 13th, for the Last Call. This was the 2007 season finale at
QCR featuring a double main event, $3,000 to win Open Late Models and $2,000 to
win Street Stock Nationals. Also racing were the Mod Lites, 4 Cylinders, and
B-Modifieds.
In the Mod Lites Scott Spink took advantage of his outside front row starting
spot and grabbed the early lead and never let it go. Shon Sanders and David
Norton made runs at Spink with D. Norton challenging Spink on the top side of
the track but Spink was able to hold him off and take the checkered flag for the
second time at QCR this season. D. Norton held onto second followed by Sanders,
Jeff Norton, and Randy Bryan. Heat race wins went Spink and Mike Morrill.
In the 4 Cylinders Chris Holmlund jumped out to the early lead with Shawn Pappas
on his bumper. Pappas would make the pass and then the Cody Krenz made a run at
Pappas for the lead. Krenz would get into the wall so then, A-Modified veteran,
Kelly Meyer took his shot at the lead using the low side to pass Pappas.
Mechanical failures would end Pappas’ night. John Flurry tried his hand at first
but Meyer was able to hold him off and take the win. Flurry took second followed
by Jeremy Kingsley, Chris Holmlund, and Curtis Sample. Heat race wins went to
Flurry and Krenz.
In the B-Modifieds Brad Pershy and 2007 B-Modified Track Champion, Greg Durbin,
put on a heck of a show. Pershy took the early lead and right away Durbin was on
him. Lap after lap these guys were side by side. At times it looked like Durbin
was going to get Pershy but it didn’t happen. They ended up pulling away from
the rest of the field and going into turns three and four on the last lap Durbin
tried it one last time but Pershy held him off for the win. Durbin was second
followed by Joe Jones Jr., Timmy Current, and Doug Curless. Heat wins went to
Pershy and Current.
A nice field of Open Late Models showed up for the chance to win $3,000. Adam
Oppendike, with a spec motor, took the early lead with the UMP National
Champion, Dennis Erb Jr., on his bumper. While Oppendike held onto the lead Tim
Lance was challenging Erb Jr. for second and at one point got by Erb Jr. Lapped
traffic would slow up Oppendike and Erb Jr. would get second back T. Lance and
then he made his move for first in the lapped traffic and got it. Erb Jr.
started to build a lead while Oppendike, T. Lance, and Rob Toland battled for
second. Junior Shickel was making a run to the front before getting caught up in
a wreck on the front stretch involving Oppendike, R. Toland, Darrel DeFrance,
and Eric Gustaf. Everyone except for J. Shickel were able to continue. Once they
went back to green Erb Jr. was like a rocket and pulled away from the field. T.
Lance and Steve Lance Jr. fought for second while Ryan Dauber and David
Engelkins made their way from the back to the front. Erb Jr. would take the
checkered followed by T. Lance, S. Lance Jr., Dauber, and Engelkins. Heat race
wins went to Oppendike and R. Toland.
An amazing 49 Street Stocks checked in Saturday night to take a shot at the
$2,000 payday. Six heat races were ran with top two advancing to the feature
event. The winners of those heats were Buck Harmening, Rob Henry, Chris Desseyn,
Rick Schriner, Andrew Burk, and Chris Hambright. Cars that didn’t make the top
two of their heat had to run in a semi-feature. There were two semi-features,
one of 18 cars and one of 19 cars. The top 4 from each of those would make the
feature event. Jason Bahrs, who started 14th, won semi one and Mel Saffren won
the semi two. The 20 car field was now set and ready to roll for the 50 lap main
event. Hambright took the early lead with Harmening, Brandon Maciejeski, and
Mike VanGenderen fighting for second. Meanwhile towards the back Bahrs, who
started 13th, was making his way to the front very quickly. Maciejeski have
mechanical problems ending his night so now it was Harmening, VanGenderen, and
Bahrs battling for second. Bahrs would get by both drivers and set his sights on
Hambright. After another yellow Bahrs was able to make his move for the lead.
Another driver that started deep in the field, Matt Werner, was making his move
to the front on the bottom of the track. Upfront Bahrs started pulling away
while Harmening and Hambright fought for second. Harmening would get by
Hambright. Werner, who came from 16th, was now challenging Hambright for third.
At this point Bahrs had a half track lead on Harmening who was in second. Werner
finally got by Hambright for third and then the yellow came out with two laps to
go. The stage was set for a two lap dash for $2,000. Bahrs would not be denied
though but Werner took advantage for the restart to get by Harmening for second.
Bahrs would lead the last two laps and took home the $2,000 check. Werner took
second followed by Harmening, Cory Bauer, who came from 18th, and Rob Henry, who
came from the back after being involved in an early caution.
Everyone from Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank all the fans,
drivers, and sponsors for this race and all the races at Quad City Raceway,
Aledo Raceway Park, and C.J. Raceway this season a success. We look forward to a
great 2008!
