MACON SPEEDWAY 4-5-08 RECAP

MACON, IL (April 7) - Macon Speedway opened its 63rd consecutive year of racing Saturday night with the 1st Annual Spring Fling. Racing action started with the return of Chevrolet Late Model qualifying. Brent Kreke of Lebanon took the top spot in qualifying, posting a 10.718 second lap just two tenths of a second short of the Late Model track record.

Norm Wood posted his first win of the season in the first race of the season. Wood took The Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman series feature by more than half a lap over runner-up Mike Pickering of Decatur. Heat winner Jeff Graham ran strong early in the race, but couldn’t overcome being set back by heavy traffic.

Veteran driver Jim Leka won the BARBECK Communications Modified feature. Leka was under pressure from teammate Jeremy Nichols throughout the race. “I tried to go high and low. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.” Nichols said of trying to catch the defending track champion.

Brent Kreke held the Chevrolet Late Model lead for most of the race before a wreck with lapped traffic. Local favorite Kyle Logue moved into first place for the remaining laps. Cory Daugherty needed help from lapped traffic to challenge, but couldn’t navigate the field and finished in second.

With a shredded left-front tire, Tyler Blankenship held on to his car long enough to finish the race in first place.
