Murf Sweeps QCR!!! EAST MOLINE (May 18) - It was a gorgeous day at the Quad City Raceway and after a rain-out the week before all the drivers and fans were ready for some good dirt track racing and thats what they got Sunday night. Five divisions ran Sunday night with Mod Lites running with the regular program. The Mod Lites will run a limited schedule at QCR in 2008. The features got underway with the UMP Street Stocks. Right away the winner from two weeks ago, the 01 of Ron Marks Jr., pick up where he left off. Marks grabbed the lead and never looked back as he lead wire to wire in the 15 lap caution free feature. Chris Hambright in the 03 and Jason Bahrs in the 96 had a nice battle for second with Bahrs coming out on top. Joe Beal in the 77 would take 4th with Clint Morehouse in the 15 rounding out the top five. Buck Harmening took home the JC Dubil Hard Charger Award coming from 14th to finish 6th. Heat race wins went to Morehouse and Bahrs. These Street Stocks will be running for $2,000 to win this Sunday, May 25th, at the Quad City Raceway. This should be an outstanding show with the nations top Street Stocks planning on making the trip. Up next were the UMP Modifieds and they delivered an excellent feature event. Veteran Bob Stogdell in the 50 took the early lead with Mike Zemo Jr. in the Z in chase. Zemo would drop out the mechanical problems so while Stogdell was building a lead the real race was for second between Jake Waterman in the 10, Milo Veloz Jr. in the 43, Nathan Balensiefen in the 83, and Marty Thompson in the 25. You could throw a blanket over these drivers thats how close they were running. A yellow came with six laps to go and thats not what Stogdell wanted to see. On the restart Stogdell lost his driveshaft forcing him to pull the car into the infield. Waterman took over the lead with Veloz and Balensiefen on his bumper. Waterman found a unique way around QCR. Going into turns one and two he would slide the car all the way up against the wall slapping the tail against the wall and the running the very bottom of the track in turns three and four. This worked for Waterman until the final lap. Going into turn one Waterman would climb the wall and instead of the rolling the car he landed it back on all four wheels and continued racing. This allowed Veloz and Balensiefen to get by and race side by side with Balensiefen taking home the narrow victory. Waterman managed to hold onto third with Donovan Lodge fourth, who came from 10th, and Doug Curless fifth. Heat race wins went to Stogdell and Waterman. In the UMP 4 Cylinders Wade Dahl, in the D26, continued his dominance. Dahl started fifth but it didnt take long before he had the lead and pulled away from the pack. The 20.5 of Ken Poole, 66 of Steven Phillips, and 13 of Shawn Pappas had a nice battle for second with Poole coming out in second followed by Phillips and then Pappas. Scott Powell in the 9 would round out the top five. Heat race win went to Poole. The IMCA Late Models hit the track next. At the drop of the green Mike Murphy Jr. in the 14 took advantage of his outside front row starting spot and jumped out to the lead. LeRoy Brenner in the 53 ran with Murphy for several laps before Murphy began building a lead. Murphy would lead the entire race for his first QCR win in 08. Midway through the feature Nate Beuseling in the 46, Hershel Roberts in the 58, and Dave Engelkins in the 165 had a good fight for third with Beuseling winning that battle. After a yellow late in the race Beuseling and Roberts were able to challenge Brenner for second but Brenner held them off. Beuseling held onto third followed Roberts and Adam Oppendike in the 29 rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to Murphy and Mike Garland in the G1. The night ended with Mod Lite feature event. Rob Guss in the 91 was the man to beat for the majority of the race with Jerame Mowery in the 88 and David Norton in the 007 on his bumper. Guss ran into some bad luck spinning out late in the race allowing Mowery to take the lead and not look back. Jeff Norton in the 1 managed to get by the D. Norton for second late in the race. Scott Spink in the 10 took fourth followed Bobby Fox in the 8. Heat race wins went to Eric Close and Bobby Fox. Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank all the drivers, fans, and
sponsors for making Sunday night a success. The next event at the Quad City
Raceway will be the $2,000 to win UMP Street Stock Nationals. Also running
will be the IMCA Late Models, UMP Modifieds, and UMP 4 Cylinders. |
