VanderBeek Victorious in Spring Clash at Quad City Raceway

EAST MOLINE, IL (June 3) -  Patient and calculating, Zack VanderBeek has been a model of consistency this season. The 23-year-old from New Sharon, Iowa, has racked up eight top-5s and ten top-10 finishes in 17 starts this season, and Sunday night he finally put a digit in the win column with a thrilling victory at the Quad City Raceway in East Moline, Ill.

The 2004 Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar Rookie of the Year started the 24-car, 40-lap main event from the ninth starting spot, but quickly picked off his competition as he moved to the front. On lap 16, VanderBeek was up to second and challenging leader Marty Thompson on the low side of the racing surface. Four laps later, VanderBeek was still looking for a way around Thompson when defending race winner Kelly Shryock took control using the high side of the high-banked quarter-mile oval.

With Shryock pulling away, VanderBeek was finally able to wrestle the runner-up spot away from Thompson and quickly began closing the gap on the leader. While Shryock was faster than Thompson, he was no match for VanderBeek as “The Z-Man” took the lead away on lap 29, then paced the final 11 laps and won going away.

Shryock held on for second with pole sitter Dereck Ramirez scoring a career-best third ahead of Jason Hughes. Thompson claimed a fifth-place paycheck.
Milo Veloz, Al Hejna, Bruce Hanford, Alan Mondus and Bob Dominacki finished sixth through 10th, respectively, in a race that went caution-free after a first-lap yellow brought about a complete restart.

As it did for Hejna the previous night, VanderBeek's $2,000 win propelled him into the Central States Region points lead after three events. The points race is extremely tight, however, as VanderBeek's advantage over Hejna is just one point (288 to 287), while Hughes is just four points out of the lead. Shryock moved one spot ahead of Ramirez and holds a one-point cushion (266 to 265) going into Monday night's race. Ron Ver Beek (214), Donovan Lodge (213), Colt Mather (197), Ryan Gustin (196) and Mondus (191) complete the "Top Dogs" ranked in the top-10.

In the IMCA Late Models Morrison’s Mike Garland grabbed the early lead and continued to lead until Ray Guss Jr. came from his ninth starting position to challenge for the lead. Garland was running the bottom of the track while Guss was running all the way up against the wall. After racing side by side for several laps Guss took control of the lead and never looked back. Guss would lead the rest of the way and pick up another IMCA Late Model win in the 2008 season. Garland would hold to second with Hershel Roberts, who started tenth, coming home third, Mike Murphy Jr., who started eleventh, finishing fourth, and Dave Engelkens, who started fourteenth, rounded out the top five. Shawn Mulvany also had a great run coming from seventeenth to finish sixth. The heat race wins went to Murphy, Corey Goldbeck, and Roberts.

In the UMP Street Stocks Jason Bahrs picked up right where he left off last week with another solid victory. Nathan Hall would take control of the early lead with Bahrs coming fast from the fifth starting spot. Hall held off Bahrs as long as he could but Bahrs was too fast and would take over the lead and go onto his second win in as many weeks. Clint Morehouse, coming from the seventh starting spot, would also get by Hall for second. Hall would not give up another finishing third. Korey Peterson finished fourth after starting tenth, won the JC Dubil Hard Charger Award. Mark Massey had a nice run too coming from eleventh to take the checkered flag in fifth. Heat race wins went to Bahrs and Chris Lawrence.

In the UMP 4 Cylinders it was the same story just a different night. Wade Dahl continued his dominating ways at QCR with another feature win. LaSalle Speedway regular Mark Sutton gave Dahl a run for his money for the first several laps but Dahl was too strong and got by Sutton and led the rest of the way. Sutton would hold onto second in his first trip to QCR. Shawn Pappas would finish third followed by Todd Sibley and Joseph Wagner. The heat race wins went to Sibley and Sutton.

Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank all the drivers, fans, and sponsors for making the 2nd Annual USMTS Spring Clash a success. Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would also like to send out a special thanks to the USMTS for putting on an outstanding Modified program. The next events for the Stuart Motorsports, Inc. will be weekly points racing at LaSalle Speedway Saturday night and weekly points racing at Quad City Raceway Sunday night.
