First UMP Modified Win for Mitch Morris by: Brad Hines EAST MOLINE, IL (June 22) - It was Mid-Season Championship time at the Quad City Raceway Sunday and a solid field of cars showed up to try to put their car into victory lane. With Mid-Season Championship comes the Front Row Challenge. The top two in points in all four divisions had a choice to make. They could either stay in their starting spot or go to the back and try to double their money. The UMP Street Stocks got the features going and both Jason Bahrs and Clint Morehouse took the challenge and lined up 15th and 16th for the feature. Once the green waved Buck Harmening shot out to the lead with Greg Gill coming on strong on the very bottom of the track. In the back Bahrs and Morehouse began picking off spots and moving towards the front. Harmening and Gill started racing hard for the lead with Harmening up top and Gill down low. Lap after lap they raced side by side. Meanwhile Bahrs and Morehouse continued moving up and before long Bahrs was up to third and running down both Harmening and Gill. They took the waving green with two laps to go and Bahrs took the lead on the high side but that only lasted second as mechanical failures forced Bahrs to slow on the track and bring out the yellow. Harmening and Gill finished the final two laps racing side by side with Harmening holding off Gill for his first win in 08. Nathan Hall had a nice run finishing third followed by Morehouse, who also won the JC Dubil Hard Charger for the third week in a row, and Korey Peterson. Heat race wins went to Matt Werner and Justin Rutledge. In the UMP 4 Cylinders points leader Wade Dahl, in his back up car, took the Front Row Challenge and started dead last. Josh Riley, in his first trip to QCR, wasted no time and powered his way to the front and never looked back. Todd Sibley and Mark Sutton battled for second for several laps while Dahl was able to move up nine spots but couldnt quite get to the front. Riley would go onto win followed by Sibley, Sutton, Tim Woeckener, and Dahl. Heat race wins went to Steven Phillips and Dahl. Like usual the IMCA Late Models put on an outstanding show. With the IMCA National Points in mind both Mike Murphy Jr. and Hershel Roberts decided to keep their front row starting spots and declined the challenge. Murphy grabbed the early lead and was flying on the bottom of the track. Ray Guss Jr. started moving towards the front right away from his seventh starting spot. Guss eventually caught up to Roberts and Adam Oppendike and quickly took over second. Guss used the very top of the track and reeled in Murphy. They raced side by side for several laps, Guss up top and Murphy on the bottom. Guss would finally took over lead but Murphy didnt give up battling his way back and catching back up to Guss. The raced side by side some more until Guss dropped to the bottom of the track closing the door on Murphy. Guss would start to pull away and would take home his fourth win in a row at QCR. Murphy held onto second followed by Oppendike, Shawn Mulvany, and Mike Garland. The heats went to Guss and Mulvany. UMP Modifieds ended the show with some excitement. The Front Row Challenge for the UMP Modifieds was kicked up a notch. Promoter, Brian Stuart, really put the pressure on points leader Milo Veloz Jr. who decided to take the challenge. Stuart told Veloz if he wins the fans next week would get $2 off admission and $1.50 beer and pop. Veloz wasted no time and started passing cars on every lap. Up front Mitch Morris was hugging the bottom leading lap after lap. Kevin Blum who started seventh moved up to second and set his sights on Morris. Blum caught up to Morris and in turns one and two Morris stayed down low while Blum went all the way up against the wall. Blum would get a nice run off of two but it was enough to get by Morris. Then Blum would get right on Morris bumper in the three and four and try the very top side in one and two. Lap after lap they raced this way with Blum trying everything to get by Morris. Meanwhile Veloz was coming through the pack quickly but at the half, while running seventh, Velozs cars slowed on the track ending his night. Back up front Morris, the second generation driver, was too strong on the bottom side and would hold off Blum for his first UMP Modified feature win. After Blum it was Doug Crampton, Jim Sandusky, and Doug Curless. Heat race wins went to Veloz and Crampton. Everyone from Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank all the fans,
drivers, and sponsors for making the Mid-Season Championship a success.
Weekly racing continues next weekend at the LaSalle Speedway on Saturday
