Gill Grabs First QCR Win!!! EAST MOLINE, IL (June 29) - Even with dark clouds looming over the Quad City Raceway 85 cars checked in the pits Sunday night. The Mod Lites joined the program to go along with the normal UMP Street Stocks, UMP 4 Cylinders, UMP Modifieds, and IMCA Late Models. The features got underway with the UMP Street Stocks. Nathan Hall took the early lead with Chris Hambright and Buck Harmening right on him battling for second. Point leader Jason Bahrs, who started 17th, was moving through the field quickly while Hall, Hambright, Harmening, and Gill battled up front. Bahrs would make it to the top 10 before slowing on the track ending his night. Back up front Gill had used the bottom of track to get by both Harmening and Hambright and was running down Hall. Gill was hugging the tires while Hall was up against the wall and after the final caution Gill used the bottom groove to pass Hall for the lead. Gill would lead the rest of the way to take home his first QCR victory. On the last Harmening got by Hall at the flag stand to take second Justin Rutledge would finish fourth followed by Matt Werner. The JC Dubil Hard Charger also went to Werner. Heat race wins went to Hall and Hambright. The UMP 4 Cylinders were up next. Point leader Wade Dahl took full advantage of starting on the pole and jumped out to a big lead right away. Nick Johnson, from the Canton, IL area, raced Tim Woeckener and R.J. Gonzales for second. Dahl would go unchallenged to win another feature but the real race was for second as Johnson held off a hard charging Gonzales for second. Woeckener would take third followed by Mike Morrow. The heat race win went to Devo Timmerman. The IMCA Late Models were next and they put on an outstanding show once again. Rookie Todd Malmstrom took the early lead and began building a lead while Mike Murphy Jr. and Ray Guss Jr. were picking off spots moving towards the front. Back up front LeRoy Brenner was closing in on Malmstrom for the lead. Brenner was at the bottom and Malmstrom was up on the top groove. Brenner would get by Malmstrom and take control of the lead. Murphy moved his way to second and before long he was on Brenner for the lead and Guss was on both of them. Murphy would get by Brenner and soon after Guss would too. With five laps to go Guss was all over Murphy for the lead. They were both all over the track with Guss trying everything to get by Murphy and Murphy doing everything to hold Guss off. Murphy would hold off Guss for the win and end Guss’ four race winning streak. Brenner would finish third followed by Hershel Roberts, who came from 14th, and Shawn Mulvany. Heat race wins went to Murphy and Mulvany. Mod Lites hit the track next for their second trip to the Quad City Raceway in ’08. Rob Guss took the lead right away and looked like the man to beat. His son Anthony Guss was in second battling Bobby Fox. After a caution Erik Close found the middle groove and would shoot out off turn two and challenge R. Guss for the lead. After battling for a few laps, Close would take over the lead but R. Guss was still right there. After a late caution Close would hold off R. Guss for the win and A. Guss would hold off a late charge from Jerame Mowery for third. David Norton would round out the top 5. Heat race wins went to Jeff Norton and Mowery. The night’s racing would be capped off with the UMP Modifieds. A great field of 24 UMP Modifieds checked in Sunday. Brandon Durbin returned to QCR and grabbed the lead right away with last week’s winner, Mitch Morris, and Ray Bollinger on his bumper. Morris managed to get under B. Durbin and take over the lead with Bollinger, Doug Crampton, and Milo Veloz Jr. fighting behind them. Crampton would come out on the top of that battle and set his sights on Morris. Crampton ran down Morris and was on his bumper lap after lap. Nathan Balensiefen came on strong late and caught up to Morris and Crampton. Morris held them both off for his second win in a row at QCR. Crampton held onto second followed by Balensiefen, Veloz, and Bollinger. Heat race wins went to Balensiefen, Morris, and Veloz. Everyone from Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank all the fans, drivers, and sponsors for making Sunday night a success.
