Sibley & Waterman Pick Up Their First UMP Wins of 08 EAST MOLINE, IL (August 3) - On a sweltering Sunday afternoon 76 cars rolled into the pits to do battle in four divisions. Along with the usual UMP 4 Cylinders, UMP Street Stocks, UMP Modifieds, and IMCA Late Model there was also a Mod Lite Match Race between the drivers with the most feature wins from their respected division. Also as an added bonus there was a make-up UMP Modified feature from the weekend before. In the UMP Street Stocks Jason Bahrs continued his amazing season leading the feature event flag to flag. The best race was for second place between Chris Hambright, Ron Marks Jr., and Korey Peterson. For several laps these drivers side by side going three wide many times. Peterson would come out on top coming from 14th to take second. Hambright would take third followed by Marks, who started 11th, and Nathan Hall rounded out the top five. The heat race wins went to Bahrs and Rob Henry. The UMP 4 Cylinders put on one of the more exciting features of the night with five cars all in position to take the lead racing neck and neck for most of the race. Mike Morrow and Shane Kelly were the drivers in front of pack of five for most of race running side by side for several laps with Wade Dahl, Todd Sibley, and R.J. Gonzales right behind them fighting for second. After a late yellow flag it looked like Kelly was going to pull away but Sibley and Morrow caught Kelly and coming out of turn four all three of them traded paint and Sibley managed to hold on and take home the win. Kelly took second followed by Morrow, Gonzales, and Dahl. Heat race wins went to Gonzales and Joseph Wagner. The UMP Modifieds had two features to run Sunday night. The first feature was a make-up from last Sunday and that was the race that kicked off the night. This feature was all Milo Veloz Jr. and Doug Crampton. The top two drivers in UMP Modified points at QCR pulled away from the field from their front row starting spots. Some lapped traffic made it interesting for Veloz but he got through it and picked another feature win in as many nights, Veloz also won the feature at the LaSalle Speedway the night before. Crampton took second followed by Jason Pershy, Doug Curless, and Brandon Durbin. In the second feature race it was all Jake Waterman. In his first night back at QCR, Waterman led every lap, holding off several challengers. Ray Bollinger was all over Waterman from the drop of the green. Bollinger would get a great run off of turn four but Waterman would hold him off time after time. Unfortunately for Bollinger his car had mechanical failure with two laps to go. Waterman would hold off a late charge from Jim Sandusky and Milo Veloz Jr. to win his first career UMP Modified feature. Sandusky took second followed by Veloz, who came from last, Brad Pershy, who started 12th, and Jerry Durbin, who started 11th, rounded out the top five. Doug Crampton had a nice run too coming from second to last to finish 6th. The heat races went to Bollinger, Waterman, and Veloz. Like usual the IMCA Late Models put on an excellent feature race. Nate Beuseling got by both Mike Cothron and Mike Guldenpfennig early on in the race to take over the lead and Beuseling began pulling away from the field from there. Towards the back both Mike Murphy Jr. and Ray Guss Jr. were making their moves towards the front. Guss finally found himself on Cothrons bumper racing for second. Both Guss and Cothron caught up to Beuseling but lap after lap Beuseling held both veterans off. A late caution, which Beuseling did not want to see, was the opportunity Guss was looking for. On the restart Guss was all over Beuseling going high and low. Guss would get by Beuseling win another IMCA Late Model feature. Beuseling took second followed by Cothron, Murphy, and Adam Oppendike. Heat race wins went to Guldenpfennig, Murphy, and Guss. Thanks to the Norton family and Ron Hull, Stuart Motorsports, Inc. set up a unique Mod Lite Match Race featuring the drivers with the most wins from their division to do battle for six laps and the winner gets extra money added to their divisions purse for the night. From the UMP 4 Cylinders it was Wade Dahl, from the UMP Street Stocks it was Jason Bahrs, from the UMP Modifieds it was Milo Veloz Jr., and from the IMCA Late Models it was Ray Guss Jr. After some mechanical problems were fixed for Guss, breaking off the shifter, the race got going and it was an exciting one. It started off with Guss and Veloz racing side by side but Bahrs found his way into the mix and took over the lead with Guss right on him. They raced side by side with Guss passing Bahrs coming out of turn four to take the checkered flag. Veloz took third followed by Dahl. Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank all the fans, drivers, and
sponsors for making Sunday night a success. Racing will continue next
weekend, August 10th, with a full program in each division plus 2 make-up
IMCA Late Model features from 2nd Annual Summer Sizzler that was cut short
by rain on July 27th. |
