3 IMCA Late Model Features 3 Different Winners
by: Brad Hines

EAST MOLINE, IL (August 10) - On an absolutely perfect day nearly 80 cars in four divisions checked in the pits at the Quad City Raceway to do battle on the high banked quarter mile. There was a lot of racing to get in with two IMCA Late Model make-up features scheduled from the rain shortened Summer Sizzler Triple 25’s.

In the UMP Street Stocks Buck Harmening held off challenges from Matt Werner, Nathan Hall, and Korey Peterson to win his second feature of ’08. Harmening took advantage of his outside front row starting spot grabbing the lead right away while Werner gave him a fight. Harmening would eventually pull away from the field to take checkered flag. Peterson came from 9th and battled Werner for second but Werner held him off. Hall took fourth followed by Greg Gill. Heat race wins went to Harmening and Hall.

A nice field of UMP 4 Cylinders put on a great show Sunday night. At the drop of the green Steven Phillips, Travis Wilson, and Clay Vickers went three wide for the lead. Wilson came out on top of that battle with Vickers right on him. Vickers would pull next to Wilson and run side by side for several laps before Vickers finally took over the lead and never looked back. Vickers would go onto win in his first trip to QCR. Wilson held onto second followed by Shane Kelly, Wade Dahl, and Phillips. Heat race wins went to Phillips and Wilson.

The UMP Modifieds put on an outstanding race Sunday. The green waved and six cars were in position for the lead; Vince Cooper, Brandon Durbin, Doug Crampton, Doug Curless, Milo Veloz Jr., and Mike Zemo Jr. They were all going three and four wide, bumper to bumper. Cooper, B. Durbin, and Veloz separated from the field with B. Durbin pulling ahead. Veloz was all over B. Durbin every lap with Crampton and Curless back on Veloz’s bumper. B. Durbin took everything Veloz had and took home his first UMP Modified feature of the ’08 season. Veloz took second followed by Crampton, Curless, and Zemo. Heat race wins went to Crampton and B. Durbin.

The IMCA Late Models had over 60 laps of racing ahead of them Sunday with their regular feature plus two make-up features. The first feature of the night was the regular feature scheduled for Sunday night. Stephan Kammerer and Mike Guldenpfennig fought for the lead at the drop of the green flag with Mike Cothron right on both of them. Mike Murphy Jr. and Ray Guss Jr. began moving towards the front while Kammerer and Guldenpfennig continued battling for the lead. Before long Murphy was on Kammerer and Guldenpfennig lead and Guss was on Cothron. Murphy would get by both Kammerer and Guldenpfennig and begin building a lead. Guss wasted no time in getting to second and then set his sights on Murphy. Guss caught Murphy and used the high side to get by Murphy. From there Guss never looked back and won another feature at QCR. Murphy was second followed by Guldenpfennig, Cothron, and Adam Oppendike. Heat race wins went to Kammerer, Oppendike, and Nate Beuseling.

In the first IMCA Late Model make-up feature there was eight laps down with Adam Oppendike in the lead before the rains came on July 27th. So they picked up were they left off. Right away Oppendike pulled away from the pack while Dave Engelkens, Mike Garland, and Ray Guss Jr. battled for second. Garland and Guss got by Engelkens and began running side by side with each other. Guss would get by Garland and run down Oppendike. Lap after lap Guss was all over Oppendike. Guss tried high and low but Oppendike was too fast and would go onto to win second IMCA Late Model feature this season. Guss would take second followed by Garland, Mike Cothron, and Engelkens.

The last race of the night was the second IMCA Late Model make-up feature. The fans voted and 13 cars were inverted from the finish spots in the first make-up feature. LeRoy Brenner took advantage of the invert and grabbed the lead and pulled away from the field. Shawn Mulvany, who started sixth, wasted no time in getting to second and quickly began to run down Brenner. Mulvany would catch Brenner but Brenner held Mulvany off running side by side with each other lap after lap. Towards the back Mike Murphy Jr., Mike Cothron, and Ray Guss Jr. were all moving very fast to the front. Very late in the race Guss caught both Brenner and Mulvany. With two laps to go, while moving through lapped traffic, Mulvany saw an opening and passed Brenner for the lead. Mulvany would lead the last two laps and win his first IMCA Late Model feature of 2008. Brenner held off Guss for second with Cothron taking fourth followed by Murphy.

The Quad City Raceway Hall of Fame votes, from August 3rd, were counted and six drivers and one contributor were selected to be inducted on September 21st at the Quad City Raceway Hall of Fame Classic. The six drivers were Jerry Reinhart, Donald “Terry” Ryan, Shane Davis, Ernie Speth, Dean Montgomery, and Jim Gerber. The contributor will be Doyle Bennett.

Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thanks all the fans, drivers, and sponsors for making Sunday night a great success. Racing will continue next Sunday at the Quad City Raceway with racing in all four divisions plus the Mod Lites will be joining the program. There will be no racing Saturday night at the LaSalle Speedway. Racing will resume at the LaSalle Speedway on Saturday, August 23rd.
