Rain-Free Saturday lets Macon Speedway
Shine
By Brett Zerfowski
MACON, IL (May 2) - It rained all week in central Illinois. Puddles and mud
were all over Macon but on Friday evening, the rains stopped and that
allowed the track to begin drying out and with a rain-free Saturday, the
track was open for business.
It was a special evening at Macon Speedway. A two-feature night for the Late
Models and the Cinco de Mayo festival plus full show were all on the plans
for the first Saturday of May.
The first Late Model feature, originally scheduled for April 18th, followed
the Touchtone Energy Sportsman heats and Steve Hill’s first-ever checkered
flag. The front row consisted of Cory Daugherty and Kyle Logue, two fast
cars vying for the first feature of the night.
On lap 6, Bill Wilhour got loose in turn two and John Woodard spun to avoid
Wilhour but the oncoming traffic led to disaster. Brian Dasenbrock had
nowhere to go and rode on the top of Woodard’s car and flipped over on the
backstretch against the fence. All drivers would escape without harm but the
opposite would be said for both Woodard’s and Dasenbrock’s Late Models.
On the restart, Cory Daugherty would have problems on the high side of the
track and coming to lap 7, both Chris Dick and Matt Taylor had passed the
Blue Mound native on the bottom side of turn four. Daugherty would be forced
to pull off the track on lap 23 when smoke poured out of the back.
The race would stay green-flagged after the lap 6 red flag and Kyle Logue
would have the feature win, his second of 2009.
Rick Roedel had the car to beat in the Touchtone Energy Sportsman feature.
Early in the race, Roedel was running well on the top side of the track with
Jeff Graham running second. Things took a turn for the worse for Roedel when
his rear end broke and pulled into the infield. Graham would take the lead
and hold off Scott Landers for his first feature of the year during Graham’s
first night back since winning the 2008 track championship in the Sportsman
division.
The Modified feature was loaded with excitement from the very beginning with
pole sitter Guy Taylor thumping the wall and flattening his tire. Dave
Crawley, Jr. would take over the lead, in search of his third feature of
2009. On lap 8, Steve Ewing, who had been racing extremely well in the
Modified during the night, took over the lead and held off Crawley for the
final 12 laps. Crawley tried to retake the lead but Saturday night was
Ewing’s night.
After taking the first 25-lap feature during the make-up from April 18th,
Kyle Logue sat on the pole for the second 25-lapper. Along with Cory
Daugherty, Chris Dick and Ed Dixon, who drove from Washington, MO., Logue
battled with Daugherty and Dick but as the light stayed green throughout the
race, the further Logue’s lead became. Daugherty began having smoke issues
reminiscent of the make-up feature earlier in the evening and began to fade.
Logue swept both features and built on to his Late Model points standings
lead.
The Street Stocks feature event was also a nail-biter until the finish as
former track champion Mike Pickering and defending track champion Steve
Ewing raced side-by-side for more than half of the race. A slip-up by
Pickering opened the window of opportunity for Ewing, who took control of
the race. For the final three laps, Ewing held off Pickering as they came
off turn four. Ewing won the feature by nearly half a car-length. Ewing’s
win was his second Street Stock feature of 2009.
Both Pro and Amateur Hornets had near photo-finishes as Joe Reed, last
week’s feature winner, raced three drivers to the finish with Mike Pundt,
Jr., Zach Dodd and Jeff Dodd all trying to take the first-place prize.
Coming into the first turn of the final lap, Pundt’s left-rear wheel came
flying off the car. Reed and the others continued to race to the backstretch
as the yellow and checkered flag came out and it would be Joe Reed taking
his second consecutive Pro Hornets feature.
The Amateur Hornets had Ben Medaris leading nearly the entire race until
Heidi Hames battled from the back to the front and took the lead into the
second turn. The win for Hames was her third in the Amateur class. Because
of her feature win last week, Hames had to start in the back of the feature.
Next week, she will have to do the same as per the Amateur Hornets rules.
Next Saturday night at Macon Speedway will be an evening loaded with family
fun. It will be the Mother Dear program that will feature the Crazy Chicks N
Cars powder puff race. Also on the program will be the make-up of the
Modified feature from the April 18th rain-out. In addition to that feature,
the regularly scheduled feature will be for $600-to-win in a special
three-night Spring Series in conjunction with Jacksonville’s Morgan County
Speedway and Shepp’s Speedway.
Each night will consist of $600-to-win features and a series point fund.
Macon Speedway will also have its first of five races in the Late Model
Midwest Big Ten Series. Again, teaming with Morgan County Speedway (who will
have the first race on Friday, May 8th) and Shepp’s Speedway, there will be
a $10,000 point fund for the ten race events. All divisions will be racing
the night before Mother’s Day so it will be another full show.
The First is the Rain out Feature from April 18.
