Quad City Raceway May 17th, 2009
By Mike Sunken
EAST MOLINE, IL (May 19) - It was a cool, clear night at Quad City Raceway.
Nearly 100 cars had checked into the pits for racing action, and the action
was nothing less than spectacular once again.
First off in heat race action, the Eastern Iowa Lanscaping Services LLC. UMP
Modifieds took the track. In the first heat race, Gary Cook Jr. picked up
the win. Milo Veloz Jr. finished a close second, and 2008 track champion,
Doug Crampton, came home third.
In heat two, Peoria, Illinois driver lead all 8 laps with Colona’s Brad
Pershy second, and Eureka, Illinois driver Brock Bauman third. Finally the
third heat was picked up by Nathan Balensiefen, Chad Patch was second, and
Kewanee’s Ray Bollinger was third. In the feature event for the modifieds,
twenty-two cars started the race. Eureka driver, Brock Bauman, was your
early race leader but Gary Cook Jr. and Milo Veloz Jr. both moved up to the
top side and started to close the gap. By lap five, the drivers were three
wide coming out of four. Gary Cook Jr. was at the wall and took the lead and
was never challenged after that. The Deer Creek, Illinois driver went on to
pick up his second UMP Modified feature of the season at Quad City Raceway.
Nathan Balensiefen finished second for the third straight week, and he is
your point leader. Brady Pershy, Doug Crampton, and Ray Bollinger rounded
out your top five. The Hard Charger in the race was Peru, Illinois driver
Joe Adam as he started twentieth and brought his number sixty-six machine
home sixth.
In the Street Stock division, twenty five cars checked in to compete. Heat
races were won by Chris Lawrence, Bob Simpson and Matt Werner. The feature,
which started twenty four cars, was as good of a fifteen lap feature as you
will ever see. Geneseo, Illinois driver Matt Werner grabbed the early lead,
holding off a fast Joe Beal who was second. Unfortunately, Beal’s night
ended with a meeting with the turn two wall on about lap five. Then driver
Clint Moorehouse zoomed up from his sixteenth starting spot to challenge for
the lead. Werner and Moorehouse made contact quite a few times as Moorehouse
finally made the pass on the final lap coming out of turn four to take the
win. Werner held on for second, with opening night winner, Chuck Barnes,
coming home third. Hard Charger of the race was Wilton, Iowa driver Brad
Tyler, who started the feature twenty fourth and finished a very respectable
fifth. Remember next week, May 24th, is the $2,000 to win and
$200 to start Extreme Auto Glass UMP Street Stock Nationals. A big field of
cars is expected to be on hand.
Next division to take the track was the Avenue Rental IMCA Late Models. A
full field of twenty-one cars were on hand for the nights action, including
a surprise visit from seventeen time track champion, Gary Webb, who is
driving the Z-2 owned Hal, Russell car. Heat races of the night were
captured by Adam Opendike, Kevin Blum, and Mike Garland. In the feature Mike
Garland was your early race leader and was checking out before he spun on
his own and brought out the races first caution on lap six. Then Todd
Malmstrom inherited the race lead, and lead until lap twelve as Mike Murphy
Jr., was able to get by. 2008 track champion, Murphy Jr., went on to pick up
the twenty-five lap main event holding off Blum, who finished in the runner
up spot. Todd Malmstrom managed to finish third, with Matt Ryan and Adam
Opendike making up the top five.
In the Aarons Affordable Towing 4 Cylinders, heat races were won by Clayton
Bicker and Justin Veloz. Bicker went on to win the twelve lap, seventeen car
event, with Todd Sibley second, and Scott Powell third.
Thirteen Modlites also checked in, with Knoxville, Illinois driver Greg
Rossell picking up the heat race win. Then in the feature, modified driver
Milo Veloz Jr., picked up the win in the fifteen lap feature. Veloz Jr. was
in the Norton owned 1 race car. Grag Rossell finished second, with Colona
driver Jason Masengarb third.
Don’t forget racing action next week with the Extreme Auto Glass UMP Street
Stock Nationals $2,000 to win main event. Pit Gates open at 1:30. Front
gates open at 4p.m., with racing at 6p.m. Also racing will be IMCA Late
Models, UMP Modifieds, and UMP 4 Cylinders.
