Blum Wins IMCA National Title
By Mike Sunken
EAST MOLINE, IL (September 1) - It was a very cool summer evening once again
at the Quad City Raceway, as it was the season championship for the IMCA
Late Models. 21 cars were on hand to do battle on the final IMCA local and
national point night. It was also kids box-car races as the kids got to come
one track and show off their box-cars at intermission. The kids were also
treated to a bike give away. And another added intermission goody was the
announcing of the 7 people going to the Quad City Raceway Hall of Fame.
Those seven inductees were Gene Freeman, Ken Reimers, Duane Steffe, Charlie
Moffit, Ray Guss Jr., Tuffy Meyer, and Bill Starr.
First off the UMP 4 cylinders had 15 cars check in for the night. Heat races
winners were Rob Brasher and Derrick Courson. In the 12 feature event, Todd
Sibley used the very top of the race track to win the race by over a half of
lap. Rob Brasher finished in the runner up spot and Derrick Courson was 3rd.
Rounding out the top five were Chris James and Chase Pavelonis.
The Mod-lites had double features for the night. In there heat race Shon
Sanders picked up a win. In the first feature event Anthong Gus captured his
win of the year at Quad City Raceway in the 15 lap feature. Jason Masengarb
was 2nd, and Greg Rossell was 3rd. In the regular feature, point leader
Jason Masengarb extended his point lead with another feature win. Greg
Rossell would finish 2nd and Bobby Toland would wind up 3rd.
In The UMP Street Stocks, a solid field of 15 cars were on hand. Heat race
winners were last starting Steve Lewis and point leader Chris Lawrence. In
the feature event RJ Gonzalez was your early race leader, but Joe Beal was
making his way thru the field, and had moved into the 2nd spot. On lap 7 RJ
Gonzalez spun out leading the race giving to the lead to Beal. Then on lap 9
Matt Werner pressured Beal, and on lap 10 he finally made the pass on the
outside to go on and win the 15 lap feature. Joe beal woould finish a strong
2nd and Chris Lawrence was 3rd. Rounding out your top 5 were Steve Lewis and
Greg Gill.
In the UMP Modifieds, 20 cars signed into the pits. The first heat race was
won by Jerry Bailey Jr., who made a beautiful pass on the outside of turn 4
on Leland Bushong on the last lap to take the win. The other two heats were
won by Gary Cook Jr , and current point leader Doug Crampton. In the 20 lap
feature event, UMP National point leader, Gary Cook Jr picked up his 2nd win
of the weekend, as he won at Kankakee on Friday. Doug Crampton ws 2nd, and
13th starting Mike Spatolla was 3rd. Milo Veloz Jr and Jeff Morris rounded
out the top 5.
In the IMCA Late Models, Rob Toland picked up the qualifier win. In the
feature event, both Terry Neal and Kevin Blum entered the night with 15
feature wins a 5 2nd place finishes. So if either driver won, they would
pick up the IMCA National Title. Well Kevin Blum did that as he led the
final 22 laps, as Nate Buesling led the first three, and Kevin Blum is your
2009 IMCA National Champion. Ray Guss Jr would finish 2nd in the feature,
and he wound up 3rd in National points. Nate Buesling would wind up 3rd in
the feature. Terry Neal started 13th in the feature and worked himself up to
4th, but that is all the farther he would make it. Neal would end up 2nd in
National Points. Rob Toland rounded out the top five.
Racing action will continue this Sunday night, with triple 20 lap feature
for the UMP Modifieds, all paying valuable UMP National points. Also each
feature will pay a $1000 to win and $100 to start. Also on hand next Sunday
will be a qualifying feature for the Quad City Raceway Hall of 100 lapper
for the IMCA Late Models. Pit gates will open at 1pm, front gates will open
at 3pm. Hot laps for the mods will start at 330pm, and time trial will be at
4pm. Late Model hot laps will be at 530pm, with racing action to get
underway at 6pm. For more info goto www.quadcityraceway.com.
