EAST MOLINE, Ill. (March
22) – Randy Massarolo brings a keen sense of history into his first season
as promoter at Quad City Speedway. A 30-year veteran of the
sport, as a car owner and sponsor, crewman and track employee, he’ll bring
IMCA Modifieds back to the ¼-mile dirt oval after a 23-year absence from
regular programs at East Moline. The sanctioned open wheeled class joins
IMCA Late Models on Sunday shows from opening night on May 2 to Aug. 29. While the Late Models have
been a fixture at East Moline since 2004, the last weekly IMCA Modified race
was held there in 1987. “Several of
IMCA’s national champions have come from the Quad City area,” noted
Massarolo, who expects to see a number of drivers from both sides of the
Mississippi River mount strong bids for IMCA titles. “With the sanction,
Modifieds will have the opportunity to
run for points Fridays at Davenport Speedway, Saturdays at Jackson County
Speedway and at East Moline on Sundays.” Modified
sanctions at Davenport and Maquoketa were new in 2009. Both tracks also
sanction their Late Model divisions
with IMCA. All three tracks are part
of IMCA’s ButlerBuilt North Central Region for Modifieds. “This is an economical
class for local weekly drivers,” said Massarolo. “IMCA is a proven, quality
sanctioning body and we’ll continue with everything fans and drivers have
come to expect from IMCA.” Test and tune sessions
start at 2 p.m. Sundays April 18 and 25, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28
and are also open to local modified, street stock and 4-cylinder classes.
Grandstand admission those three days is free while pit passes are $15. Late Models
race for $1,000 to win on opening night. No Late Model points will be given
during the June 13 Ronnie Weedon Memorial for Quad City’s non-sanctioned
modifieds. Mid-season championship
night is July 11. The winner of the
Thursday, July 22 Late Model feature during the Rock Island County Fair
earns $1,500. National, Allstar Performance state and local track points
will be given for that event. Checks for
car registration can be mailed to Massarolo at PO Box 387 in East Moline,
61244. That cost is $30 if postmarked
before April 20 or $40 after that date. “There’s a lot of IMCA
Modified history in the Quad City market,” said Brett Root, vice president
of operations for the sanctioning body. “It’s good that drivers in the area
will have the opportunity to race for national and regional championships.”
