STELLAR NIGHT OF RACING MARRED BY BILLINGSLEY'S DQ
BY: Paul Bayne
KANKAKEE, IL (June 25, 2010) - Once again, an early arriving crowd went the
distance to take in an exciting night of racing action at Kankakee County
Speedway Friday night, as the Wisconsin based Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprints
presented by the US Army invaded Kankakee County for the first time since
2007. Twenty-five 410 Outlaw Winged Sprint Car warriors took the 1/3-mile
clay oval in hopes of cashing in on the $2,500 top prize. Jerrod Hull of
Sikeston, MO overtook race leader Billy Balog with less than a dozen laps
remaining, then jetted out to a sizeable cushion as points leader Balog gave
chase.
In other
action, Kankakee's Jason Hastings scored his first UMP Modified win of the
season, by besting race leader and pole-sitter Vince Cooper of Morris, while
Nick Allen was relegated to a season worst third place finish. Rounding out
the top five were AJ Dixon and point leader Jim Farris.
Owen Alberts led a cast of 16 UMP Sport Compacts to the start, as well as
the finish, despite having to hold off the challenges of Indiana's Bubba
Lawson, and point leader Matt McCarty, who unveiled a brand new ride after
having his car destroyed two weeks prior in an altercation with Matt Maier.
McCarty purchased and thrashed on a former Axle Wicker owned machine all
week just to get back out and protect his point lead. Finishing fourth was
Nick Clubb, followed by John Provenzano in fifth. The race was highlighted
by a wild barrel-rolling Scott Cupples, who rolled his car five or six times
on the front stretch bringing out a red flag. Cupples did complain of some
stiffness to his neck but was otherwise unhurt from the incident which also
involved Allan Provenzano.
The always
exciting UMP Stock Cars proved once again why Kankakee is the UMP Stock Car
capitol of Illinois, as 32 combatants entered but only one, David
Billingsley of Chebanse would be victorious, or so it appeared. Following
the race upon request, Billingsley, along with runner-up Darrin Kohler, and
third place Don Hilleary were asked to remove one valve cover so that each
car could be teched. While Kohler and Hilleary complied, and Billingsley
wanted to, he was urged by both his car owner and engine builder not to pull
the valve cover in the pits seeing as it was a brand new $10,000 motor under
the hood. While Billingsley accepted the decision, he was stripped of the
win and disqualified, thus giving the win to Kohler over his step-brother
Hilleary. That put a slight damper on an otherwise outstanding night of
racing which attracted a large crowd along with sprint car drivers from four
states.
