PEORIA, IL (May 7, 2011) - Angie Pierce got the ultimate racing Mothers Day gift on Saturday night at Peoria Speedway, watching her 14 year-old son Bobby take his first-ever Super Late Model feature in a wildly entertaining duel through traffic with former Track Champion Tim Lance. The son of Dirt Late Model Hall-of-Fame driver and chassis builder Bob Pierce looked like a seasoned veteran, fighting lapped traffic and a rim-riding Lance for his first career Super Late Model victory after spending last season in the Crate Late Model division. Steve Lance, Jr. jumped to the start over Todd Bennett as the field circled the inside of the track, and held on through 2 caution periods in the first 2 laps. On lap 4, Tim Lance, driving a Rayburn owned by Russ Adams, became the first driver to run the high side of the track and chased down Bennett for 2nd on lap 6. As Lance continued to show his nose to his brother, Steve Lance started to block on the high side. A lap 14 caution bunched the field back up, as both Lance brothers ran the top of the track and Pierce continued to hug the bottom. Pierce took second from Tim Lance on lap 20 and then took the lead down the backstretch on lap 22 in lapped traffic. Tim Lance passed his brother in traffic on lap 24 for 2nd, and caught with Pierce on lap 28. Pierce got caught by a lapped car down the backstretch, allowing Tim Lance to take the lead going into turn 3. Pierce bumped the lapped car to get by, and the duo was side-by-side as the white flag flew. The cars were even going into turn 3, but another lapped car slowed Pierce and it appeared Lance would drive away. As they entered turn 4, sparks flew as Lance hit the turn 4 wall, and Pierce slid under the lapped traffic. Pierce nipped Lance at the line by an estimated 3 feet. Lance, Jr. ended up 3rd, with Donny Walden and Jay Sparks completing the top 5. “This is awesome to get my first win here”, said the younger Pierce in victory lane. “it’s only my second year in these cars, so I gotta thank my dad for his advice. We wanted to stay on the bottom the whole race, and that strategy paid off. Tim and I had a great race there at the end.” Ray Bollinger dueled Mark Johnson over the first 7 laps of the UMP Modified feature, and then made a pass in the middle of the track on lap 8. Bollinger held off Tommy Duncan, Johnson, Donovan Lodge and Roger Cary for the win. “Everyone was running the bottom there so I kept looking at the middle to see if there was anything there’, said Bollinger. “Mark was slowing entering turn 1 so I went beside him and made it stick in turns 3 and 4. It’s good to get a win” Steve Schoener held off Jack Siegel for a win in the Limited Late Model division. “Jack kept showing me his nose there so I had to get up on the wheel a little bit”, said Schoener. “The car was good and the track wasn’t bad either” Chuck Barnes led flag-to-flag in the Pro Street feature, and gave credit to his crew chief in victory lane. “I want to thank my 15 year-old daughter Kylee for being my crew chief tonight. My brother had surgery this week so she took over and the car was great.” The Hornet division was the second photo finish of the night, with Jeremy Kingsley nipping Kenny Butterfield at the line for the win in a terrific side-by-side race. “Kenny has won like 5 in a row, so its’ good to finally get one under my belt”, Butterfield said. Action resumes next Saturday night at Peoria Speedway with a full UMP racing program.
