Martin, Duffy, Bauer score Indee Outlaw victories at
Independence Motor Speedway
By Ryan Clark
INDEPENDENCE, IA (Oct. 7, 2006) A field of 104 cars signed in to compete in
the third annual Indee Outlaw Special at Independence Motor Speedway. The event
marked the close of the 2006 season at the speedway.
Sporting sprint car wings, Plexiglas panels and other performance enhancing
alterations in the rules-free format, drivers provided fans with the high-speed
action on the 3/8-mile oval.
Curt Martin put on a clinic in the 20-lap late model feature. Martin quickly
worked his way into the lead after just one lap after starting in the fourth
position. He then pulled away from the field, entering lapped traffic on the
seventh circuit.
In a race that went caution-free, Martin lapped all but the second place
finisher, Dale Stolte. Erik Gustaf was credited with third.
Like Martin, Darin Duffy shot into the lead quickly from his second row start in
the modified feature. Duffy briefly engaged in a side-by-side battle with
pole-sitter Dennis Dugan before pulling away from the field to take home the win
in the 15-lap event. Dugan and Timmy Current completed the top three.
Although slowed a handful of times for caution, Cory Bauer, Dan Trimble and
Tracy Gienger put on an exciting three-car battle at the front of the 20-lap
stock car feature. Trimble led the first lap before Bauer assumed command the
second time past the flagstand.
Bauer continued to pace the field as Trimble and Gienger fought for second. When
the checkers waved, it was Bauer holding on to the top spot to take the win.
Trimble and Gienger crossed the line in second and third.
Ken Hanson took advantage of his pole position start in the 15-lap B modified
feature. Hanson jumped into the early lead and quickly put distance between
himself and the rest of the 25-car field. Hansons fortunes turned, however,
when his ride went up in smoke at the midway point of the event.
Timmy Current inherited the top spot and led the remainder of the event to take
the win ahead of Darrell Jaster and Ray Lundry.
Wayne Hora led the entire distance of the hobby stock feature, but did so while
heavily pressured from Terry Shaffar and Josh Irvine. Hora took the checkers
when the race reached its time limit eight laps into the scheduled 15-lapper.
Shaffar and Irvine ran second and third.
A dozen vintage coupes were also on-hand for the season finale. Bruce Lund used
a last corner pass on race leader Wayde Russell to take top honors in the
15-lapper. Walt Ryan finished third.
