Zrostlik and Remley take Davenport LM Mains
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, IA (June 15) - It was another full night of racing at the
Davenport Speedway Friday night. The evening started with the final race to be
made-up from the rain shortened May 25th, program.
The IMCA late model make-up feature started with Joe Zrostlik on the pole
position. Zrostlik jumped out to an early lead, survived a couple of early
cautions, and then distanced himself from the field to take his first late model
win. Seven different drivers either held or were contending for the runner-up
spot. At the checkers, it was Fred Remley finishing second with Matt Ryan third,
Andy Nezworski fourth, and Terry Neal fifth.
In the regular weekly program, the IMCA late model feature was the final race of
the night and the track had changed drastically. The race started with outside
pole sitter, Rob Toland rocketing to the lead around the bottom of the track.
Five cautions over the first 15 laps kept the field close.
Around lap ten, the middle and top grooves came back to life and Fred Remley got
by Toland on lap 14 for the lead. Remley would lead the remaining distance for
his first win of the year. Toland would fight back to finish second. Mike Murphy
Jr., who started 18th, finished third, ahead of Matt Ryan and Andy Nezworski.
Late Model heats were won by Ryan, Rob Toland, and Ron Gustaf.
The V-8 Modified feature was caution-filled with several serious crashes.
Fortunately, no serious injuries.
Rick Ratliff jumped to the early lead and held the top spot until lap five. Bob
Dominacki, in the #5d, started in the fifth row, and took the lead on lap five.
Dominacki held the lead until his right front tire started to go flat.
Thad Wilson took the lead on lap 14 and never looked back. The victory was
Wilson's third point win and fourth total at Davenport this season. Second at
the stripe was Kevin Blum, followed by Milo Veloz Jr., Ratliff, and Mike Zemo
Jr. Veloz was disqualified at the scales for being too light. Blum, Doug
Crampton, and John Bull were heat winners.
The 'Real Deal' Joe Beal lived upto his nickname Friday night. Beal came from
his fifth row starting position, took the lead of the Street Stock feature at
the white flag, and drove to his second win this season. Jon Poll had held the
lead from lap one, but would have to settle for second. Jerry Pratt took third,
ahead of Ron Doolittle and Brad Tyler. Poll, Josh Wilson, and Tim Koehler won
the Street Stock heats.
Mike Fluegel looked to go flag to flag in the B-Mod main, but a caution with two
laps to go was all Brad Pershy needed. Pershy blasted into the lead on the
restart and captured his first win of the year. Fluegel would hold on for
second. Joe Jones Jr., John Ahlers, and Craig Crawford completed the top five.
Todd Stickler and Crawford were heat winners.
Erick Barth made up for last week's problems and collected his second feature
win of the season, in the INEX Legend car class. Barth was leading by the end of
lap two and held a sizeable lead over second place Warren Ropp at the checkers.
The battle for third went to Keith Meyer, over Craig Peekenschieder and Matt
Montieth. Barth and Ropp won the heats.
Ricky Kay picked up his second straight 4-Cylinder win at Davenport this season.
Kay overtook Steven Phillips late in the race and led to the end. Steve Boyle
finished third over Wade Dahl and Kevin Fix. Kay and Phillips won the 4 Cylinder
heats.
Next Friday, June 22nd is Mid-Season Championships at the Davenport Speedway.
