Toland takes late model win at Davenport
by Mike McGuire
Davenport, IA (July 6, 2007) - Rob Toland has been bitten by a streak of bad
luck at the Davenport Speedway in recent weeks. On Friday night, the two-time
IMCA National Champion bit back.
The IMCA Late Model feature started with Nate Buesling leading lap one. Rick
Wages grabbed the lead away and held it through lap ten, when Buesling regained
the top spot. On lap 12, after going three-wide with the leaders, Toland blasted
into the lead.
It looked like fate would bite Rob again as Mark Preston took the point on lap
15. On the following lap, Toland would fight back, get around Preston, and drive
on to his first victory of the year at the Davenport Speedway.
Mike Murphy Jr. would also get around Preston for second, Preston was third
followed by, Doug Nigh in fourth, and Andy Nezworski rounding out the top five.
Late Model heats went to Rob Toland, Wages and Adam Oppendike.
The 'Z' car of Mike Zemo Jr. scored a hard fought win in the V-8 Modified
feature. Andy Cook took the early lead of the race from his pole starting
position. Cook held the lead through the first four laps and the first four
cautions. Milo Veloz Jr. would take the lead on lap five, but with a tire going
down, Veloz made contact with Cook bringing out the yellow again and sending
both to the pits.
Zemo would inherit the lead on the restart and separate himself from the pack.
John Bull would slowly reel in Zemo, but at the checkers would have to settle
for second. Troy Emerick would have a solid run to finish third, while Kevin
Blum went to the front, to the back, and up to finish fourth. Doug Crampton came
from 15th to take fifth. Modified heats went to Thad Wilson, Chuck Hanna, and
Jason Pershy.
A depleted field of Street Stocks saw Joe Beal win his third feature of the
season. Only eight of the starters saw the checkered flag. Following Beal to the
stripe were Ron Doolittle in second, Henry Carson in third, Kevin Schloemer
fourth, and Randy Exline fifth. Schloemer and Doolittle won the Street Stock
heats.
Brad Pershy took his second feature win of the season in the B-Mod main. Similar
to the A-Mod main, Dan Klatt took the lead from the pole and led through the
first five laps and six cautions. On the sixth restart, Brad Pershy, who started
last in the twenty-one car field, took the lead for one lap. The seventh caution
ended the race with Pershy getting the win. Jake Waterman would also pass Klatt
to finish second, Klatt was third, Joe Jones Jr. fourth, and Craig Crawford
completed the top five. Mike Fluegel, John Ahlers, and Bryan Rogers were heat
winners.
With point leader Warren Ropp absent, the INEX Legend car feature was up for
grabs. The melee that ensued saw racing veteran Matt Montieth take the checkers.
The top five was full of fresh faces with Brandon Hentges second, Jeremy Meyer
third, Darrick Calhoun fourth, and Ryan Bales fifth. Calhoun won the heat.
Ricky Kay picked up his third 4-Cylinder win at Davenport this season. Kay took
the lead on lap four and led to the end. Greg Fix took second, with Kevin Haury
third, Steve Boyle fourth, and Jim McKinney fifth. Boyle and Kay won the heats.
The Midwest Racing Jalopies were and added attraction Friday. Dan Haack won the
feature race over Butch Dunn and Larry Driskell. Dan Haack also won the heat
race.
