Hershel Roberts races to victory lane at Davenport
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, IA (July 13) - Long-time racing veteran Hershel Roberts drove to an
impressive IMCA late model victory at the Davenport Speedway, Friday night. The
victory was Roberts' first of the season.
The IMCA Late Model feature started with pole sitter Nate Buesling leading the
first two laps. Roberts would take the lead away and hold it the remainder of
the race. Rob Toland was closing on Roberts and had a good run going on lap 22,
when he slipped off the edge of the banking on turn four. From that point,
Roberts would cruise to an easy victory and an emotional celebration in the
winner's circle.
Toland would hang on for second with Doug Nigh third, Eric Gustaf fourth, and
Terry Neal fifth. Late model heat wins went to Buesling and Neal.
It was another hard-hitting night of action in the V-8 Modified class. The
caution flag flew four times, before the second lap of the feature was scored.
When the dust had settled, Thad Wilson had collected his fourth points win of
the season at Davenport.
Marty Diercks held the lead through those first four yellows, but the fourth
restart saw John Bull jump into the lead. Lap six saw Wilson get by Bull and
drive away from the field. Wilson would take the checkers a full half lap ahead
of the field. Bob Dominacki and Jim Sandusky both passed Bull on the final lap
when his motor expired. Bull held on for fourth, just ahead of Matt Stein.
Modified heats went to Thad Wilson, Chuck Hanna, and Chad Patch.
The Street Stocks saw a wild finish to their feature. Toby Spicer blistered the
field until the yellow came out with two laps to go. During the caution period,
Spicer pulled off the racetrack. On the restart Joe Beal blasted past two other
cars to take the lead. After taking the white flag, Beal had a tire go down and
brought out the final caution of the race. The victory went to Tim Koehler, with
Brad Tyler a close second. Ron Doolittle took third with Randy Exline fourth and
Kevin Schloemer fifth. Spicer and Beal won the Street Stock heats.
In the B-Mod main, Dan Klatt took the lead from the pole and led the entire
distance for his first win of the season. Jake Waterman would come from his
fifth row starting spot to finish second. Craig Crawford would finish third,
with John Ahlers and Chris Stein completing the top five. Brad Pershy and Klatt
were heat winners.
The INEX Legend car feature once again yielded another first time winner.
Darrick Calhoun started on the pole and led flag to flag for the win. Craig
Peekenschnieder was closing on the leader in the final laps, but would settle
for second. Last week's winner, Matt Montieth was third, with Jeremy Meyer and
Brandon Hentges rounding out the top five.
Steven Phillips snatched the lead on lap two of the 4 Cylinder feature and drove
to his third win of the season. Ricky Kay finished second, ahead of John Flury
in third, Wade Dahl fourth, and Justin Kay fifth. Phillips and Greg Fix won the
heats.
