Wilson, Phillips, Klatt and Roberts Repeat at Davenport
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, IA (July 20) - Hershel Roberts waited three months for his first
2007 late model victory at the Davenport Speedway, last Friday night. His second
victory would come seven days later.
The IMCA Late Model feature started with Ron Gustaf and Rob Toland swapping the
lead. On lap five, Roberts would get under both drivers and pull away from the
field. Late in the race, Fred Remley and Terry Neal began to reel in Roberts but
could not get close enough to make a bid for the lead. Roberts would take the
checkers with a car length between himself and Remley, with Neal a close third.
Mike Murphy Jr. and Eric Gustaf would round out the top five.
Late model heat wins went to Roberts, Murphy, and Neal.
Thad Wilson continued his dominance of the V-8 Modified class, picking up his
fifth feature win in eleven races. Wilson took the lead on lap seven of the
twenty-lap main, and cruised to an easy victory. Kevin Blum was the closest to
Wilson, but would have to settle for second. Milo Veloz Jr. would run in the top
five all race and finish third. John Bull and Bob Dominacki would finish fourth
and fifth respectively. Modified heats went to Chuck Hanna, Blum and Bull.
The Street Stocks saw another wild night of racing in their feature. After two
first lap cautions, Kevin Schloemer came from his fifth starting spot to take
the lead. Schloemer kept the lead through two more cautions, then swapped the
lead twice with Randy Exline on lap nine, before going on to his first feature
win at Davenport. Exline would hang around for second, with Nathan Hall, Tim
Koehler, and Andrew Burk completing the top five. Only six of the fifteen
starters saw the checkered flag. Brad Tyler and Josh Wilson won the Street Stock
heats.
In the B-Mod main, Dan Klatt collected his second straight feature win. Klatt
took the lead from Kevin Fitzgibbon on lap two and never looked back. John
Ahlers would take second with Craig Crawford finishing third, with Brad Pershy
and Jake Waterman completing the top five. Pershy and Klatt were heat winners.
The INEX Legend car feature saw a familiar face in victory lane. Wisconsin's
Eric Barth picked off his fourth feature win at Davenport this season. Barth
took the lead from Dennis Begyn on lap seven and held off Warren Ropp for the
win. Following Barth and Ropp to the checkers were Dustin Begyn in third, Craig
Peekenschnieder fourth, and Matt Montieth in fifth. Dennis Begyn and Derrick
Calhoun were heat winners.
Once again Steven Phillips snatched the lead on lap two of the 4 Cylinder
feature and then drove to his fourth win of the season. Ricky Kay would again
finish second, ahead of Wade Dahl in third, Steve Boyle fourth, and Jim McKinney
fifth. Phillips and James Roose won the heats.
The Davenport Speedway will be idle for the next two weeks as the Great
Mississippi Valley Fair comes to town. Weekly racing action at the Davenport
Speedway will resume Friday, August 10th.
