Three More New Faces Find Victory Lane During Fair Races
by Ed Potter
MAQUOKETA, IA (July 26) - Thursday evening Jackson County Speedway hosted the
Jackson County Fair Golden Harvest fair races. Because this was not on the
speedways regular race night it was a non-points, draw and redraw program. Three
drivers that had not visited victory lane yet this year, although all three have
won in past seasons, found their way into victory lane in front of a good fair
crowd. It was also nice to see some new faces at the track for the first time
this year. After a father son battle in the 4 Stock heat race, which father,
Ricky Kay won over son, Justin Kay, Justin pulled lucky chip number one for the
start of the feature. Justin used it to his full advantage as he led flag to
flag for the win. Ricky stayed in hot pursuit the first half of the race when
the races only caution flew. On the restart track point leader, Matt Montoya
took over second and held on until the checkered flew. Ricky was third with Kile
Vohringer fourth and Ray Costello fifth.
Young Jake Hayes used his Hobby Stock feature front row starting spot to take
the early lead but cautions soon played a part in this race. Bryan Klein took
over the lead on lap five then the races second caution flew, this time sending
Hayes to the pits for repairs. Three laps later the caution flew again involving
Klein and then second place runner, and second heat winner, Dan Mohr sending
both to the rear. On the restart first heat winner, Neil Patchin put his Mopar
out front and went on for his first win of the season. Matt Wilson was second
with Mohr and Klein coming back up to take third and fourth, respectively. Jeff
Specht was fifth.
After winning the first B Modified heat race, Jarrett Franzen drew lucky chip
number one to start the feature and used it to it’s fullest as he led flag to
flag to take his first win this season. Second heat winner, second place runner,
Tom Pestka broke an axle on the second lap causing his retirement from the race.
Chris Stein moved into second but with three laps to go John Irwin got by to
take the spot. Stein held on for third with Rick Galloway fourth and Kory Meyer
fifth.
Mike Driscoll won the Street Stock heat race and didn’t pull chip one for the
start of the feature, he pulled chip two and used it to lead flag to flag to
take the victory. A third lap restart saw Cory Bauer move into second and keep
the pressure on Driscoll for the rest of the race, but Bauer had to settle for
second. Kevin Brame was third with Shane Oberbreckling fourth and Russ
Williamson fifth.
Pole sitter Tim Arp grabbed the early lead of the V8 Modified feature with Brad
Dierks taking over on lap nine. At lap twelve Don Pataska moved out front with
Dierks in hot pursuit. At lap fourteen it appeared that Dierks had taken over
again but the caution flew putting Pataska back out front. At lap sixteen Dierks
moved by and appeared to go on for the win, but post race inspection found his
car to light turning the win over to Pataska for his first this year. Jim
Willert took second with Jake Bowman third, Tim Current fourth and Jeff Morris
fifth. Current, Jeff Morris and Dan Chapman won the heat races.
Bobby Toland started on the pole of the Late Model feature and took the lead
until a ninth lap caution brought the field back up tight. On the restart Terry
Neal moved out front and was soon holding off the challenges of a hard charging
Ryan Duhme. At lap twenty one as the two ran side by side Duhme actually inched
forward enough to lead that lap by inches. Neal moved back out on the next lap
and went on for the win. Duhme held on for a strong second with Bobby Toland
beating his dad to take third. Rob Toland was fourth with Jason Bahrs fifth.
Duhme and Kevin Blum were the heat winners.
