Guss, Wilson, & Tyler Win in a Wild Night at Davenport
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, IA (Aug 17) - Friday night at the Davenport Speedway, started as a
relatively quiet evening as there were only a handful of cautions throughout the
14 heat races. At feature time, it was a completely different story.
The IMCA Late Model feature started with pole sitter Leroy Brenner leading the
first three laps. Mark Preston would grab the top spot and hold it until the
caution flag came out on lap 11. Rob Toland took his turn at the front on the
ensuing restart. Two laps later, Dave Warth would take the lead from Rob, with
Toland returning the favor on lap 15.
Lap 18, saw Warth make contact with Toland in turns 1 & 2, bringing out the
second and final caution of the race. Both cars were retired to the pit area.
The yellow brought Ray Guss Jr. to the front and he did not waste the
opportunity. Guss would lead the remaining laps to capture his fourth win in six
appearances, at Davenport this season.
Stephan Kammerer had his best finish this season in second, with Hershel Roberts
third, Terry Neal fourth, and Mark Preston fifth. Heat races went to Doug Nigh,
Rob Toland, and Mark Preston.
Kevin Blum was looking for two in a row in the V-8 Modified feature. Blum
snatched the lead from Milo Veloz Jr. on lap nine and had a sizeable lead on lap
15, when a rut upset his car, dropping him back to fourth. Thad Wilson benefited
from Blum's bobble. Wilson led the last six laps to take his sixth feature win
of the season at Davenport.
Marty Thompson's first visit to Davenport in 2007, yielded a second place
finish, followed by John Bull in third, Blum fourth, and Matt Stein fifth. Heat
wins belong to Blum, Bob Dominacki, and Rick Ratliff.
Toby Spicer tried to blister the field again in the Street Stock feature. Spicer
led through the first five laps and three cautions. But on the third restart,
point leader Brad Tyler put his car in front and went on to put his third
victory of the season into the record books. Rob Henry took second, with Chris
Lawrence, Kevin Schloemer, and Spicer completing the top five. Tyler and Spicer
were the heat winners.
The B-Mod main was a wild affair. After four caution flags and zero laps
complete, the field was parked until the end of the racing program. When the
race resumed, Chris Stein took the early lead. Stein would hold the lead through
three more cautions and take his first Davenport win. Half a dozen drivers held
the second spot during the race, with John Ahlers second at the checkers. Doug
Burkhead finished third, with Todd Stickler fourth, and Craig Crawford in fifth.
Stein, Crawford, and Mike Fluegel were heat winners.
The INEX Legend Car feature was also an exciting race, as two drivers swapped
the lead several times. Keith Meyer came from his fourth starting position to
lead the first three laps. Dustin Begyn led laps four through eight with Meyer
retaking the point on lap nine. Following a lap 10 restart. Begyn retook the
lead. On the 12th and final lap, Begyn bobbled in turn one, giving the lead and
the win to Meyer. The victory was his second of the year. Craig Peekenschieder
finshed second, with Ken Burns third, Darrick Calhoun fourth, and David Dvorak
fifth. Calhoun was the heat race winner.
Justin Kay picked up his first 4-Cylinder win at Davenport this season and had
to beat his father to get the victory. Justin came from 10th starting position
and passed his dad, Ricky Kay to take the lead. Ricky would follow his son to
the checkers and take second, with Steve Boyle third. Rob Harding drove through
the pack to take fourth, and Jim McKinney was fifth. Kevin Haury and Boyle won
the heats.
Next Friday, August 24th is the Davenport Speedway Season Championships.
Post-season racing at the Davenport Speedway is highlighted by the Davenport
Dirt Classic - Friday, September 7th.
