Season Champions Crowned at Jackson County
by: Ed Potter

MAQUOKETA, IA (Aug 25) - Saturday night was Krieger in DeWitt Season Championship night at Jackson County Speedway and the old luster returned as one hundred and twenty-nine cars were in the pit area to do battle. Along with the regular racing divisions the Midwest Jalopies were on hand for their second visit to the track this year. After winning the jalopie heat race young Rodney Haack started last on the field for the feature. Chris Gillmore took the early lead with Dan Haack taking over on lap five with Rodney hard in tow behind him. The Haacks started battling side by side for the lead with Rodney leading lap seven and Dan coming back to lead lap eight. On lap nine Rodney went out front for good to take the win. Gillmore got back by Dan for second with Haack taking third. Bud Daufeldt was fourth with Bob Mingst fifth.

It took a while to get the 4 Stock feature going but it was a battle right from the start. Kile Vohringer led the first lap with Matt Montoya taking over on a second lap restart. Montoya led the rest of the way to take his fourth victory of the season, but Vohringer, Brannon Bechen, and a couple of Kays were right there waiting for any mistake to be made. Bechen took second with Vohringer third. Fifteenth place starter Justin Kay took fourth over his Father, Ricky’s fifth. Chris Holmlund, Ricky Kay and John Campbell took the heat wins Montoya also took the point championship..

Wayne Hora started on the pole of the Hobby Stock feature and went on to take his sixth win of the year, but he didn’t lead all the way. Hora took the early lead with second heat winner, Corey Rupp right on his tail. On lap seven the caution flew for Rupp and one lap later it flew again as Robin Hute rolled her race car. On the restart third heat winner, Sheldon Hunter moved out front, but suffered mechanical problems two laps later turning the lead back over to Hora on the white flag lap. Hora got the win with Matt Wilson taking second. First heat winner, Dan Mohr was third with Tim Bader fourth and Bruce Yoerger fiflth. Hora’s win insured him of the point championship.

Another driver that insured his point championship was Dan Klatt as he led the B Modidied feature flag to flag for his second win this year. Brendan Driscoll came from twelfth to take second with Kory Meyer third, Jarrett Franzen fourth and Rick Galloway fifth. Heat race wins went to Ben Traver, Klatt and Driscoll.

Street Stock action was wild and wooly as the fourth caution of the race was for Ron Poll’s rolled over car in turn one. The entire rear end came out from under the car. Outside front row starter, Terry Rittmer grabbed the early lead with first heat winner, Cory Bauer taking over on lap seven. The race was called over at lap ten as the caution kept flying, and Bauer made his first visit to Jackson County Vicrory lane this year. Josh Wilson’s second place finish earned him the Point Champoinship for the year. Klay Letcher was third with second heat winner, Chip Kohl fourth and Scott Dierks fifth. Mitch Schmitz won the other heat race.
Doug Crampton tied up his second point championship in three years as he led a caution shortened V8 Modified feature flag to flag for his third victory of the season. Bart Miller was second followed by Jim Willert, Mel Saffran, and Tim Arp, in that order. Willert, Ray Cox Jr and Crampton won the heats.

First IMCA Late Model heat winner, Terry Neal grabbed the early lead of the feature with third heat winner, Rob Toland taking over on lap three. Soon it was a five car battle up front for the point between Toland, Neal, Hershel Roberts, Ryan Duhme and Mark Preston. Unfortunately Roberts suffered mechanical woes and brought out a caution at lap thirteen. This tightened the field back up and on the reatart Toland went back out front with Neal actually nosing ahead to lead lap fifteen, but Toland was not having any part of that as he went back out front on lap sixteen and stayed there. Toland took the win for his fourth of the season at Jackson County. And the race couldn’t have gotten over at a better time for Rob as something in the rear end broke as he went under the flag stand for the checkers. Duhme took second with Neal third. Last place starter, Jon Merfeld was fourth with Jason Masengarb rounding out the top five.

Be sure to come to the speedway this Saturday night as it is Cheater’s Night and the Eve of Destruction trailer races.
