Guss provides fireworks at Davenport

DAVENPORT, IA. (July 4) - Independence Day was liberating to racers and fans at the Davenport Speedway. For the first time in a month, racecars took to the Davenport track on SPEED RACER: The IMAX Experience night, for an evening of high-speed thrills.

A full field of IMCA Late Models saw Ray Guss Jr. step to the head of the class once again. The July 4th victory was Guss’ third at Davenport in this abbreviated season. Guss, who had started ninth, took the lead on lap nine of the 25-lapper, from early race leaders Eric Gustaf and Hershel Roberts. Once in the lead, Guss was unstoppable.

Boone McLaughlin, aided by some cautions, made a late run at Guss, but was never in position to make a move for the lead. McLaughlin finished second, followed by Mike Murphy Jr., Gustaf and Matt Ryan.


Guss, Hershel Roberts, and Nate Buesling won the heats, while Leroy Brenner took the consi.

In Pro Mod action, Thad Wilson became the first driver in that class to repeat this season. Wilson also snatched up the lead on the ninth lap of his feature after starting tenth. Bob Dominacki emerged from the pack to take second over Chuck Hanna, Doug Crampton, and Kelly Meyer. Crampton and Matt Stein won Pro Mod heats.

The Street Stock division yielded a first-time Davenport winner in Gerald Ward. Ward used his front row start to power away from the field for the win. Rick Schriner and Cary Brown would finish second and third respectively. Matt Werner and Nathan Hall rounded out the top five. Ward, Henry Carson, and Jeremy Marquette scored heat race wins

The B-Mods tried to make the night more interesting, as they had a rash of caution flags before five laps were complete. Once they got down to busness , Kelly Meyer roared into the lead. Meyer drove to the winner’s circle again and kept pace with Tod Stickler. Each racer has three feature wins at Davenport this season and are the only B-Mod racers to win. Stickler would finish a close second to Meyer this time around, with Chris Stein, Criag Crawford, and Rick Schriner rounding out the top five. Schriner, Meyer, and Pat Fennelly, were heat winners.

Chris Zrostlik picked up his first win at Davenport in the CrashedToys.com 4 Stocks. Zrostlik started on the outside pole and led flag to flag..Matt Montoya made a bid for the lead late in the race, but could not complete the pass. Third went to Josh Riley, followed by Wade Dahl and Jake Montoya,

No fireworks display is complete without a bang-bang finish and that’s what the INEX Legend Cars supplied. Leaders Dennis Begyn and Jeremy Meyer were battling side by side for the lead, coming to the white flag. The two made hard contact, spinning wildly, and bringing out the yellow. At that point the race was called due to time and third place runner, Bret Diercks, was declared the winner. Second went to Aaron Meyer, third Craig Morris, fourth Al Kump, and fifth Ken Burns.
