Brett Moffitt and 5K Motorsports Return to Action

GRIMES, IA (July 28) – After a well deserved weekend off, Brett Moffitt and the 5K Motorsports team returned to racing action, competing three nights in a row at three different tracks in two different states.

On Thursday night the team pulled into Wisconsin International Speedway, Kaukauna, WI, ready to compete against area short track specialists in 30 laps of high speed, door to door, racing action. Early in practice, Moffitt and crew were pleased with the handling and speed the 5K prepared Chevrolet Impala SS had. Moffitt, who is still learning the art of qualifying rather than heat racing, posted the fifth fastest time, solidly in the field with a starting position inside the third row. From the drop of the green flag, it was obvious that a temperature change had affected the track conditions. With only thirty laps scheduled for the feature event and no opportunity to adjust on the car, Moffitt still managed a ninth place finish keeping his high average of top ten finishes intact. When asked about the car after the race, Moffitt commented, “By the time the feature came around, the track had changed a bunch. The car was extremely loose; it was a handful to handle.” While his ninth place finish was not what Moffitt was hoping for, it was still a valuable night of seat time and learning for this fifteen year old rookie driver and his crew.

Friday found Moffitt and crew back at Madison International Speedway, Oregon, WI, readying for the first of two nights of ASA Late Model North Series action during the 2008 “Border Wars”. The 5K team had a good race car ready right out of the box. With good practice times, as high as fifth quick, some minor adjustments were made in preparation for Moffitt’s qualifying run. The adjustments were spot on as Moffitt was able to make his best qualifying effort to date, setting second quick time for the 100 lap feature event. After the pill draw, which dictates the invert for the lineup, Moffitt started the feature from eighth place or outside the fourth row. At the start of the feature Moffitt found himself in the same situation as the night before. Quickly changing track conditions had left Moffitt to battle an extreme loose condition. With grit and determination, Moffitt would battle the car and the competitors for 100 laps, dropping only one position to finish ninth for the second straight night in a row. Again, not what the team was looking for but, still another top ten finish for the leading ASALMS North “Rookie of the Year” contender.

Packing up and moving on, Saturday, day two of “Border Wars”, Moffitt and the 5K team set up shop at Rockford Speedway, Rockford, IL. Saturday’s practice brought something new to the weekend, a race car that had a tight condition. But, the experienced 5K Motorsports team went to work, and by qualifying time, Moffitt had the car he needed making another solid run with a sixth quick time. With the luck of the pill draw that determines the invert and the feature lineup, Moffitt would start Saturday night’s feature event in the second spot, outside the pole on the front row. From the drop of the green Moffitt showed his muscle, passing the pole car of David Gentile Jr. before the completion of the first lap. It was apparent that the 5K team had done their home work. Moffitt was slowly pulling away for the second place car and by lap fifteen, Moffitt and second place Trent Snyder were a straightaway ahead of the field and approaching lap traffic. Lap twenty was when bad luck reared its ugly head for Moffitt and the 5K team. Racing hard to prevent going a lap down, the cars of Jerrick Johnson and Brent Brevak came together, with the Brevak car coming to a rest on top of the Johnson car. All of this was happening with Moffitt and Snyder quickly approaching the back markers. Nearly missing the tangle, the Moffitt car was clipped in the right rear leaving Moffitt with a bent right rear wheel and a flat right rear tire. Snyder, the eventual race winner was able to get stopped, preventing damage to his car. With the yellow out, Moffitt limped to the pits, where the 5K team snapped into action, making the necessary repairs enabling Moffitt to return to the track in time to restart the race from the rear of the field. Moffitt struggled to move through heavy race traffic, having to exercise defensive driving tactics for the balance of the race due to multiple cautions on the Rockford bullring. Still, Moffitt would complete all of the 100 laps, ending the night that started with victory in sight, in a disappointing sixteenth place.

With only twenty-one total asphalt events under his belt and five ASA Late Model North Series events remaining for 2008, Moffitt, who continues to improve and impress, along with the 5K Motorsports team, remains intensely focused on moving Moffitt up the ASA Late Model North Series point standings ladder. Moffitt, who holds a strong grip on third place, and the 5K Motorsports team still have their sights set on the top spot that is currently held by ASALMS veteran, Eddie Hoffman. Moffitt also continues to lead a strong field of contenders for the ASA Late Model North Series 2008 “Rookie of the Year”.
