ASA Late Model Challenge Series Event Highlights Weekend for Brett Moffitt GRIMES, IA (August 25) – Brett Moffitt just experienced one of his busiest weekends to date, competing in three different events in three days. Moffitt practiced, qualified and raced in the ASALMS North Series “Governors Cup 100”, ASALMS Challenge Series “Governor Cup 150” and the ASA Midwest Tour “Milwaukee All-Star 100”. And, add to the equation, all of this happened during Moffitt’s first appearance on a one mile asphalt oval that just happened to be the famed Milwaukee Mile. On Friday Moffitt and the 5K Motorsports team unloaded the #5 Chevrolet Impala SS for practice and qualifying for the ASALMS North Series “Governors Cup 100”. After practicing at speeds that would put him in the 18th position by time, Moffitt would improve his lap times and qualify for the Saturday event in the second row outside starting position, with the fourth quickest qualifying time. The results of the 100 lap event were not exactly what Moffitt and crew were looking for. In the early stages, the #5 was loose. A pit stop to tighten the car cost Moffitt valuable track position and was only a temporary solution, as in the closing stages of the race, the track would tighten up, leaving Moffitt with a car that was now too tight. In the end Moffitt finished 14th, good enough to maintain the third place over all position in the ASALMS North Series point standings and his lead for the “Rookie of the Year”. After the race Moffitt commented, “We just did not have a handle on the car. I can’t say enough about the efforts of the 5K guys. They worked their tails off trying to give me the car I needed, and I think we learned some things that will help us in the Challenge Series race tomorrow.” Earlier in the day on Saturday, Moffitt and the 5K team practiced and qualified in the second of three cars the team had prepared for the weekend of racing. Moffitt’s qualifying time of 29.989 would be the 16th quickest qualifying time for Sunday’s ASALMS Challenge Series “Governors Cup 150”, putting Moffitt on the outside of row eight for the start of the race. Sunday’s “Governors Cup 150” would be the highlight of the weekend for Moffitt and the 5K Motorsports team. From the drop of the green, the #5 Chevrolet Impala SS, sponsored by Karl Chevrolet, DuPont Tyvek, and GM Performance Parts, was fast. Moffitt, known for his cool driving demeanor, used the valuable experience he gained from Saturday’s race, set a comfortable pace and started his move toward the front. At the end of 150 laps Moffitt found himself in third place, his first podium finish, and a career high for him in ASALMS Challenge Series competition. ASALMS Veteran Tim Sauter, who was filling in for absent crew chief Deon Deneau, commented, “I cannot say enough about the talent Brett has. He took what he learned yesterday and applied it today, with limited experience on a track like Milwaukee; he drove like a seasoned veteran.” After his second event on the Milwaukee Mile, Moffitt said, “I am very happy with our finish. I think we had something for (Robbie) Pyle but we just ran out of laps. I owe this finish to the 5K guys. We learned some things yesterday, and they gave me a rocket today.” Moffitt also commented that it felt good to stand in Victory Lane, at the Milwaukee Mile, next to drivers like Pyle and event winner, Brian Campbell. With only about half an hour for a break, Moffitt would climb into his third car for the weekend in preparation for the start of his third race in two days, the ASA Midwest Tour “All-Star 100” Super Late Model event featuring Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch and Scott Wimmer. Earlier in the day Moffitt practiced and qualified the third car of the weekend, prepared by the 5K Motorsports team. Qualifying 24th, Moffitt would be penalized four positions for a minor infraction concerning the placement of the fuel cell, putting him in the 28th starting position of the 39 car field. Again, using his head, keeping the wheels under the car and the fenders on it too, Moffitt drove from 28th to finish a very respectable 16th, just three positions behind ASAMWT veteran, Steve Carlson. The event, dominated by the NASCAR drivers, was won by Kyle Busch, with Scott Wimmer running second, and Matt Kenseth finishing third. All in all a good weekend for the rookie driver from Grimes, IA, and the 5K Motorsports team, considering that Moffitt and the 5K Motorsports team used three different cars during countless practice laps, made three qualifying runs, competed in three different events, and when the weekend came to an end, they loaded three undamaged cars after 350 laps of racing. Moffitt’s racing efforts in the ASALMS North Series and ASALMS Challenge Series are sponsored by Karl Chevrolet, DuPont Tyvek, and GM Performance Parts. Moffitt and the 5K Motorsports team utilize GM Performance Parts 604 Crate Engines for power.
