Iowa Native Brett Moffitt Gets Second Podium Finish in Two
Weeks
by: Chuck Stowe
GRIMES, IA (August 31) – ASALMS Rookie driver Brett Moffitt competed in
his home state of Iowa last Friday and Saturday nights. Moffitt, who hails
from Grimes, Iowa, competed Friday night in the ASALMS Weekly event and
Saturday night in the ASALMS North Series “Performance Concepts Iowa / Bob
Milner Memorial 100”, hosted by the Hawkeye Downs Speedway. “We have been
traveling a lot this season so it was nice to race in a couple of events
that are close to home”, was the comment from Moffitt.
Fridays race day started with practice and qualifying for the ASALMS Weekly
event. During practice Moffitt would have lap times making him one of the
three fastest cars during the practice session. The 5K Motorsports team had
again unloaded a well prepared Chevrolet Impala SS that is sponsored by Karl
Chevrolet, DuPont Tyvek and GM Performance Parts. Moffitt’s qualifying run
was good all except for one thing, a miss-communication regarding the timing
and scoring transponder on Moffitt’s car would lead to a no time for
Moffitt’s qualifying run, sending the #5 to the rear of the field for the
start of Fridays forty lap Season Championship feature. To add insult to
injury, those who were watching the qualifying times on a stop watch, had
Moffitt unofficially setting the second fastest time for the night. From the
drop of the green, Moffitt was on a mission. From his eighth row outside
starting spot, Moffitt excited fans racing past Hawkeye Downs’s regulars
including veterans like Johnny Spaw and Dudley Fleck. To put it simply, the
rookie Moffitt took the Cedar Rapid track veterans to school. Moffitt’s only
road block on his mission to the front was eventual race winner Steve
Carlson. Moffitt would pass fourteen cars and come up one spot short of a
feature win, following Carlson across the finish line for second. Moffitt
commented after the race, “If we could have started the race a little closer
to the front, I think we might have had something for Carlson. If we could
have used our qualifying time, I think the race would have ended the other
way around. All in all, it was a good race for us and I have to thank the 5K
guys for giving me a great car”.
Fast forwarding to Saturday, we find Moffitt and the 5K Motorsports team
preparing for the ASALMS North Series “Performance Concepts Iowa / Bob
Milner Memorial 100”, the second night in a row of action from the Hawkeye
Downs Speedway. For the second day in a row practice was good and driver and
crew were looking for a great qualifying run. And they got one. Moffitt
would qualify fourth fastest with a time of 18.771 seconds which is an
average speed around the half mile oval of 95.893 mph. With the inversion
draw used by the ASALMS North Series, Moffitt would move up one spot for the
start, starting in the third position from inside the second row. At the
start of the 100 lap race, Moffitt would fall back a couple of positions but
Moffitt would race smart, keeping his nose clean and using his head, a trait
he is becoming well known for. By lap thirty, the car and track had come to
Moffitt and on lap thirty-two Moffitt joined two of his fellow rookie
contenders in the top three spots, after making a pass for third. For the
next fifty-one laps Moffitt maintained his position and stayed out of
trouble. The final caution of the night came on lap eighty-three and the
stage was set for a seventeen lap shootout. Jeremy Miller restarted the race
with Joey King and Moffitt both doing everything they could to get passed
Miller for their first career win in ASA Late Model North Series
competition, in the end Miller would not be denied as King and Moffitt
chased him across the finish line.
All in all, it was a very strong showing for the 5K Motorsports team and the
current ASALMS North Series “Rookie of the Year” point’s leader, Brett
Moffitt. Moffitt has scored back to back podium finishes in his last two
outings allowing him to maintain third place overall in the North Series
point standings as well as the lead for “Rookie of the Year”. “The race went
good. The 5K crew has been working really hard lately” stated Moffitt. “We
have just been keeping our nose clean and getting what we can. Hopefully we
can have a good finish to the season; I think we will get our first win
soon”.
Next weekend Moffitt and crew will travel to the St, Louis area for the
ASALMS Challenge Series “Gateway 100”. This event, hosted by the Gateway
International Speedway located in Madison, IL, will be the Season
Championships for the Challenge Series. On the same bill for the weekend at
Gateway International will be the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. ASALMS
Challenge Series practice will take place on Friday September 5th with a
short practice session, qualifying and the “Gateway 100” on Saturday,
September 6th.
Moffitt’s racing efforts in the ASALMS North Series and ASALMS Challenge
Series are sponsored by Karl Chevrolet, DuPont Tyvek, and GM Performance
Parts. Moffitt and the 5K Motorsports team utilize GM Performance Parts 604
Crate Engines for power.
