Another Top Ten Finish for Brett Moffitt at Gateway International Raceway

GRIMES, IA (Sept 8) – Brett Moffitt scored another top ten finish last weekend, while competing in the “Gateway 100” ASA Late Model Challenge Series event at the Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois. Moffitt, who has competed in 34 events during his rookie year on the asphalt tracks, now has an amazing 26 top ten finishes and an even more amazing 16 top five finishes and 1 Feature win on the high banks of I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO; pretty impressive numbers for the young rookie driver who hails from Grimes, Iowa

Last Friday, Moffitt and the 5K Motorsports team unloaded the Karl Chevrolet / GM Performance Parts, DuPont Tyvek sponsored Impala SS for their first visit to the Gateway International Raceway, for the inaugural ASA Late Model Challenge Series “Gateway 100”. The event was one of the highest profile events on the 2008 ASALMS schedule, as they shared the weekend at Gateway with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

Thirty ASA Late Model Challenge cars checked in to qualify for the twenty-five available starting positions. Moffitt and crew were practicing in the first session when trouble struck. The Moffitt car suffered a broken rear end. With time running out before the final practice session, the 5K team was forced to pull out the backup car. Quickly making some adjustments, Moffitt had just a few laps during the final practice session just before qualifying. During the qualifying session Moffitt managed to make the field using the backup car, but would qualify for the start of the 100 lap event in the twenty-third position.
Before the official start, during the parade laps, the 5K Motorsports team brought Moffitt down pit road using this time to make some last minute adjustments and replace a right rear spring. While the adjustments were needed, the penalty for the pit road work would move Moffitt back to the twenty-fifth position for the start. From the start of Saturday’s feature, Moffitt drove the wheels off the #5 Impala SS, making good decisions to move through the field. Moffitt steadily advanced through the field, racing into tenth place, using the cool headed driving demeanor, that is gaining the ASA Late Model North Series “Rookie of the Year” contender, considerable attention. The final yellow flag would fly on lap ninety-four, when the two cars racing in front of Moffitt would make contact, causing them both to spin. Moffitt would avoid contact with the cars, but in doing so would end up off the track surface and in the infield grass. A miscommunication between driver and crew would bring Moffitt to pit road to check for a suspected flat tire. With that, Moffitt would be relegated to the rear of the field for the six remaining laps. On a mission, but remaining cool and calm, Moffitt used the last six laps the best he could, ending the race with an incredible drive, making a finish line pass to end up back in the top ten, finishing in tenth place.

While competing only on a part time basis in the ASALMS Challenge series, Moffitt’s driving ability has put him in the top twenty in “Challenge Series” points, and he has moved to sixth in the rookie points for the series. Moffitt’s main focus has been on the ASA Late Model North Series, where he is currently in third place over all in the points and is the leading contender for the “North Series”, “Rookie of the Year” honors. Moffitt’s next ASALMS North Series event comes in two weeks, when he returns to a track that has treated him well, I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO.

This week Moffitt and the 5K Motorsport team will head to Schererville, IN and the Illiana Motor Speedway, where they will compete in the 47th Annual “Tony Bettenhausen Classic 100” presented by Lisa Thomas Salons. This event is a super late model event contested on the slightly banked, half mile track. Having noticed Moffitt’s rookie driving talent, the promoter and sponsor of this event invited Moffitt and crew to participate and has even offered Moffitt a guaranteed starting spot in the annual 100 lap race. The race is scheduled for Saturday, September 13th. “I consider it an honor to have been invited to race in this event”, was the comment from Brett.
