Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Preview: Clay County Fair Speedway SPENCER, IA (Sept 9) - After the largest crowd in the history of Clay County Fair Speedway took in all of the action of the inaugural Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event at the track last season, the series will return to the 3/8-mile on Wednesday, September 10 for a full night of racing. The event will kick off a string of four races in five days, all on 3/8-mile tracks. The series has competed 16 times this season on tracks that size, with nine different drivers picking up win. Donny Schatz, the two-time defending series champion leads this list with four wins on 3/8-miles this season, followed by Craig Dollansky who has won three times. Other drivers that have been victorious on that size track include: Jason Meyers and Joey Saldana who each have two wins on 3/8-miles, along with Tony Bruce Jr., Jac Haudenschild, Kraig Kinser, Steve Kinser and Daryn Pittman who each have one victory at 3/8-mile facilities this season. Donny Schatz won the inaugural Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event at Clay County Fair Speedway last season, battling Tim Shaffer early in the race and making the pass the lead and ultimately the win on the 12th circuit. Schatz leads the World of Outlaws with 13 A-Feature wins this season as he chases his third consecutive series title. He has won 11 times in his career in the state of Iowa. Jason Meyers, who is second in points and won the second night of the Gold Cup Race of Champion last weekend, made his first start at Clay County Fair Speedway last season. The California native has nine total wins with the World of Outlaws this season and leads the series with 39 Top-Five finishes as he chases his first title. Craig Dollansky finished third last season at Clay County, in the event that he and his wife Julie, who is originally from Spencer, Iowa promote. The native of Elk River Minnesota won the opening night of the Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway last Friday night and finished second in the 55th edition of the famed event. He has seven A-Feature wins with the World of Outlaws this season, along with 44 Top-10 finishes. He is third in points entering the four events this week. Joey Saldana won the Crane Cams Dash last season at Clay County to earn the pole position for the 30-lap contest. He finished second in his first visit to the 3/8-mile. He has won twice this season on 3/8-mile tracks, at Dodge City Raceway Park in Kansas and Billings Motorsports Park in Montana. He is currently fourth in points on the strength of 36 Top-10 finishes, as he continues his third season behind the wheel for Kasey Kahne Racing Steve Kinser, the 20-time World of Outlaws champion, raced his way into the Crane Cams Dash at Clay County last season to earn a third-row starting spot in the A-Feature event. He was running fifth on the A-Feature when he had some trouble. In his career, he has 60 wins in the state of Iowa. He has won six times this season and is fifth in points, less than 20 markers out of the fourth spot. Jac Haudenschild won twice during the Gold Rush Tour, capped by his $50,000 triumph in the Gold Cup Race of Champions on Saturday night. It was the third career victory in the famed event for the veteran driver. In his first season behind the wheel for the Carnahan Motorsports team, the native of Wooster, Ohio has racked up 37 Top-10 finishes and is solidly in the sixth position in the championship standings. Kerry Madsen, the reigning Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winner, finished eighth in his first visit to Clay County last season. The native of St. Mary’s, NSW, Australia who now called Knoxville, Iowa home has 31 Top-10 finishes this season as he closes in on his first win of the campaign. Chad Kemenah, the 2006 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year, heads to Clay County Fair Speedway eighth in points, on the strength of 30 Top-10 finishes, with 11 of those being Top-Fives. He picked up a Top-10 earlier this season in Iowa at the storied Knoxville Raceway. Terry McCarl, the only World of Outlaws driver that hails from Iowa, finished seventh last season at Clay County Fair Speedway. The six-time Knoxville Raceway and Huset’s Speedway track champion is currently ninth in points on the strength of 20 Top-10 finishes. Daryn Pittman has won four times this season in World of Outlaws action and heads to Clay County 10th in points. The native of Owasso, Oklahoma has 25 Top-10 finishes. He has two wins in the state of Iowa this season to bring his career total in the Hawkeye state to four. Sam Hafertepe Jr. who continues his second full season on the road with the World of Outlaws competed at Clay County for the first time last season. The native of Sunnyvale, Texas has 13 Top-10 finishes this season as he chases his first series win. Kraig Kinser, the 2004 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year picked up his first win of the 2008 season during the Gold Rush Tour, when the series stopped at Grays Harbor Raceway in Washington. He has 13 Top-10 finishes as he continues his first season behind the wheel for Tony Stewart Racing. Jason Sides finished just outside of the Top-10 in his debut at Clay County Fair Speedway last season. The series top rookie in 2003 has 13 Top-10 finishes as he chases his first win of the season. Tony Bruce Jr., who is in his sophomore season with the World of Outlaws won in the series last visit to the state of Iowa on July 30 at 34 Raceway to earn his first career series win. The native of Liberal, Kansas has three Top-Five finishes this season. Chad Hillier picked up a Top-10 on the second night of the Gold Cup Race of Champions, finishing seventh. The second-year driver has five Top-10 finishes this season and is closing in on the Top-15 in the season standings. Lucas Wolfe, who is in his first full season on the road with the World of Outlaws, will make his debut at Clay County Fair Speedway on September 10. The native of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania has two Top-10 finishes in Iowa this season. Paul McMahan finished fifth at Clay County Speedway last season. He picked up his 13th Top-10 finish of the season over the weekend at the Gold Cup, coming home a very solid sixth. In his career, he has won once in the state of Iowa. 2007 Race Recap: Donny Schatz won the inaugural Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event at Clay County Fairy Speedway. Schatz took the lead on lap 12 from Tim Shaffer and went on to win by nearly four seconds, as he a lead by a whole straightaway at one point. After a quick yellow flag on the third lap, the remainder of the 30-lap event went caution free, with Schatz working his way through heavy traffic for the majority of the last 15 laps. Schatz was able to maneuver almost anywhere he wanted as evident on lap 11, when he dove low to get around Joey Saldana and then worked the high side of the track to nearly get around Tim Shaffer and then make the pass for the lead and ultimately the win on the following lap up high on the track. The race began with Joey Saldana, the pole sitter leading into the first turn, with Tim Shaffer charging by him on the high side exiting the second turn to take the lead. Shaffer would go on to lead the first 11 laps. The only caution of the night flew on the third lap. Early in the race, Saldana shadowed Shaffer and looked low a number of times for the lead, but could not quite get even with the leader. Schatz nearly took the lead on lap 11 as he dove to the inside of Joey Saldana exiting the first turn and then went high into turn two and almost got around Shaffer. On the next lap, Schatz used traffic to take the lead from Shaffer. Saldana had a spirited battle with Dollansky for most of the second half, taking runner-up with just three laps remaining. Each time one would pull away, traffic would close the gap. He finished second. Dollansky started fourth and gained a spot on the opening lap, before setting his sights on Saldana. The pair battled for the final 16 laps of the race and traded the runner-up spot three times. Dollansky wound up third.
