Blum takes Davenport Late Model victory
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (April 24, 2009) – Kevin Blum marked his return to IMCA Late
Model racing by scoring a feature win on Koehler Electric Season Opener
night at the Davenport Speedway. Blum took the lead of the race from Leroy
Brenner on lap two and would go untouched to the checkers.
Nate Buesling started third and would finish second, ten car lengths behind
Blum. There was an equal distance back to third place finisher Matt Ryan.
Joe Zrostlik started eighth and was a top five car all race, finishing
fourth. Ray Guss Jr., was mired in heavy traffic throughout the 25 laps and
finished fifth.
Late Model heat race wins went to Guss, Buesling, and Bret Diercks. Adam
Oppendike won the semi-feature.
The Pro Mod feature went to Moline’s Thad Wilson. Wilson and John Bull
started the feature side-by-side in the front row. Once in the lead, Wilson
was unstoppable as he drove to the win. Bull and Doug Crampton had a back
and forth battle for second. Crampton grabbed the runner-up spot for good
coming to the white flag. Bull would finish third, followed closely by Bob
Dominacki. Joe Ross completed the top five. Dominacki and Jake Bowman won
the Pro Mod heats.
Joe Beal posted his first points victory of the year in the Street Stock
main. Beal would have to work hard to get around early race leader Donnie
Louck to take away the top spot. Beal had to pass Louck a couple of times as
yellow flags kept halting the action. Jeff Stevens would also get around
Louck for second. Louck would finish third with Jeremy Marquette and Matt
Werner fourth and fifth respectively.
Weekly IMCA Modified racing returned to the Davenport Speedway Friday. IMCA
Mods have not been a weekly class at Davenport since the 1980’s.
Marion, Iowa’s Max Corporon took the return trip to victory lane. Corporon
started on the outside of the front row and quickly took the lead. A rash of
cautions would keep the field closely bunched, but on each restart, Max
would hold the lead.
Chris Stein came from his fifth row starting spot to make it a contest in
the late stages, but would settle for second. Tod Stickler also advanced
late in the race for third. Mike Fluegel and Greg Mickelson rounded out the
top five.
Wisconsin racer Eric Barth stole the show in the INEX Legend Car main. After
winning his heat race, Barth started on the pole and led the entire distance
for the win. Warren Ropp came from the sixth row to finish second with
Jeremy Meyer third and Adam Meyer fourth. The top four were the only drivers
to finish the race.
Jeremy Campbell took a hard-fought victory in the 4 Stocks. Campbell got out
to an early lead, but Josh Riley was able to track him down in the final
laps. Riley got to Campbell’s bumper, but could not make the pass. Travis
Wilson would finish third followed by Bill Morrow and Josh Hazen.
