DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 22) – Ray Guss Jr. returned to his winning ways Friday at the Davenport Speedway. Guss won the Track Tamer Engines IMCA Late Model feature, as 116 racecars were on hand to kick off the Memorial Day weekend. The IMCA Late Model feature began with front row starters Jeff Walker and Mitch Current trading the lead back and forth several times. After a lap eight caution, Guss bolted into the lead. Within 5 laps, his lead had become a full straightaway over the field. The caution would fly a couple more times, but on each restart, Guss would pull away from the field. The dogfight for second would eventually go to Nate Buesling. Jeremy Gustaf put in a solid run to finish third. Matt Ryan came from mid-pack to finish fourth, while Stephan Kammerer drove from 16th starting spot to finish fifth. Late Model heat wins went to Guss, Buesling, and Marty Diercks. Leroy Brenner won the semi. The Pro Mod main was certainly the most competitive race of the night and Doug Crampton knows it. Doug acknowledged just how close it was as he was interviewed in victory lane. Ray Cox Jr., grabbed the early lead in the Pro Mod feature, before Jake Bowman took over on lap three. Bowman was fast on the bottom and would hold the lead for the next 15 circuits. John Bull had rooted his way to the front and coming to the white flag, got past Bowman for the lead. While trying to hold off Bull for second, Crampton found that the middle groove had started to come back to life. On the final lap, Doug found just enough grip to get around Bull on the high side and take the win by a bumper. Bowman would hold on for third, with Thad Wilson recovering from an early spin to finish fourth, and Bob Dominacki fifth. The Street Stock feature saw point leader Jeremy Marquette notch his first point win of the season. Marquette vaulted from the third row to the lead following a mid-race restart. Cary Brown led early in the event, but would have to settle for second. ‘Real Deal’ Joe Beal finished third after an early spin. Aaron Burroughs and Henry Carson were fourth and fifth. Beal and Ron Marks JR., won the heats. Twenty-three IMCA Modifieds competed Friday, as the class continues to show success in its first season at Davenport Speedway. Dan Klatt jumped out to an early lead in the IMCA Modified feature and would go flag to flag, in a race riddled with cautions. While Klatt ruled the top spot the war was for second on back. Point leader Max Corporon was coming to the front and with each caution was getting closer to the lead. In the waning la ps, Corporon would pressure Klatt, but couldn’t make a pass for the lead. Following Corporon in third was Tod Stickler. Tony VonDresky and Rick Schriner rounded out the top five. Jeremy Meyer had to get around his father to win the Bulltown Legends of Iowa feature. Keith Meyer held the lead for a couple of laps, before surrendering at the checkers. Ryan Bales finished third, with Matt Montieth fourth and Chad Hale fifth. Josh Riley came from a fourth row starting spot to take the win in the CrashedToys, com 4 Stock feature. Travis Wilson and Jake Montoya were close to Riley’s racecar, but would settle for second and third respectively. Chris James and Andrew Wagener rounded out the top five.
